[SOLVED] Having an internet issue with my router...

Hey guys, my family just switched from a local internet provider to Comcast on Wednesday, and I came out of it with an odd problem. I am able to connect to our wireless router just fine but I am unable to connect to the internet (wired or wireless). With our previous provider, everything worked just fine, then Wednesday it all changed.

When I bought my router, I kept getting an error during setup so I was never able to completely set it up and now I can't get into the settings. However, even though I was unable to set it up, it worked just fine with the other provider and I am/was unable to change anything at all.

My parent's computer (The primary computer in the house) works perfectly fine and is able to get internet access, but my notebook is unable to, although I can connect to the router. I have checked and rechecked the cables to make sure everything went where it was supposed to, and I didn't see any problems. I also disconnected all the cables from both the modem and router, let it sit a few minutes, then reconnected everything and still have the problem.

Comcast was unable to help at all because they consider it a router problem they don't support... even though I stated multiple times that everything worked before we switched to them.

Oh well, can anyone let me know what I can do? Could I someway reset the router so I can try setting it up again?

Thanks a lot.

EDIT: Almost forgot... my PS3 isn't able to connect either.

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

Oh, and something I found on another thread:

Quote:
  • Make/model of the broadband modem.
  • Make/model of the router (if any).
  • Connection type, wired, wireless.
  • If wireless, encryption used, (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.)
  • Make/model of network card or wireless adapter.
  • Make/model of your computer (motherboard if home-built).
  • Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP2, Vista, etc.
  • Touchstone TM502G/H Telephony Modem
  • D-Link WBR-2310
  • Wireless (Although I have tried wired and I still have this problem)
  • No Encryption (Can't access setup because of an error running the CD =/)
  • Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter
  • Gateway MT6451
  • Vista Home Premium (up to date)

For some reason I wasn't able to continue to edit my initial post.

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

How is the working computer connected, using a wired connection to the router?

Let's see this from the working computer, and yours using a wired connection to the router.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

Your computer is getting a public IP address, which normally indicates it's either connected directly to the broadband modem, or you have the broadband modem connected to one of the LAN/Network ports, and not the WAN/Internet port where it should be connected.

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

Well I have everything connected as it should be... I'll make sure later when my parents are off the computer for the night.

Does the router essentially work as a pass-through then? Because their computer (wired to the router) gets internet just fine and mine, when I use an ethernet cable, still doesn't work at all (I can see the router, but that's about as far as it goes).

Is there any way to manually set a DNS from my computer? And maybe force an internet connection? Or is there a way I can completely reset our router so I can redo the installation process (Because like I said before, I got an error, but I was able to use the internet so I just gave up).

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

Sorry, but I don't believe the connections are proper. The only other reason for this is the router being configured for access point mode, that really doesn't make sense. The symptoms you describe are explained by not connecting to the WAN/Internet port with the broadband modem.

To reset the router to factory defaults, hold the reset button for 15 seconds with power on the router.

The part that makes no sense to me is how does the main computer (wired to the router) have internet access. I wouldn't think even that computer would work if the cables are backwards...

I'll have to reset the router and try reconfiguring at some point this week, maybe this weekend.

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

I have checked the connections multiple times and they are all correct... Modem to the WAN port, LAN port #1 to the main computer, LAN port #2 to my computer, Wireless to PS3. Only the main computer connects.

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

Did you reset to factory defaults on the router? The router is not acting like a router, which is why you have this issue. There's no other reason that properly wired that you would get a public IP address on any of the attached computers.

Out of curiosity, what do you get for an IPCONFIG /ALL connected directly to the broadband modem?

Re: Having an internet issue with my router...

I just ended up resetting the router, downloading the newest installation software from D-link, reinstalled the router as though I just bought it, and everything works fine now.

I guess the installation software that came with the router was just crap =P.

Thanks for the help.

Re: [SOLVED] Having an internet issue with my router...

Personally, I never use their installation software. All you need to configure a router is included in the web based setup interface.

Re: [SOLVED] Having an internet issue with my router...

Well, therein lies the problem... I was unable to access the web-tool for some strange reason, and I thought it was because the software was unable to finish.

After resetting the router and reinstalling the software, I am now able to access the web-tool...

Oh well, its all taken care of now, thanks.
