1 out of 5 PCs on the network has latency/connectivity problems

Good morning!

I have a network set up at home for my girlfriend, roommate, and myself. We currently have about 8 different devices that may access the internet at any given time. These include three XP (both Pro and Home) desktops, two XP laptops, two Xbox consoles, and a Motorola (Vonage) VoIP device.

These devices are connected both via a wired (Netgear FS608 V2 Fast Ethernet Switch) and wireless (Netgear WG602 V2 Wireless Access Point) network. One Xbox uses a wireless NIC as well as both laptops.

The service provider is MediaCom, the service 8MB down/512KB up cable internet. All of the wired devices, and the Netgear WAP, connect through the switch, which is linked via Cat-5 to my Netscreen 5XP hardware firewall. The Netscreen provides routing & NAT, as well as stateful packet inspection and all that other good stuff. One dynamic IP is granted via the cable modem to the Netscreen firewall based on its MAC address. The firewall receives an IP on the untrust side as a DHCP client, and acts as a DHCP server on the trusted side. I have no DMZ.

The network is running just fine, with no connectivity issues. The firewall is designed to allow unlimited devices behind it, limited via number of concurrent sessions. So far only once have we ever come close to reaching the concurrent session limit.

The devices behind the firewall are on a 192.168.1.x address range, with several static IPs assigned (for port forwarding/NAT). There are no IP conflicts. All devices are functioning properly except for one.

The second, newer laptop, running XP Pro (SP2), has had consistent problems connecting to the firewall, when no other device has. Whether it has a dynamically assigned or static IP, whether it utilizes its wireless NIC through the WAP, or wired from the switch, it will occasionally have huge connectivity/latency problems to the point where trying to ping the firewall on the network times out, and accessing web sites takes several minutes for each page. Ping times out to various servers that would be in the 100ms range will be 4000ms+.

When connected wirelessly, I notice that I can ping the WAP with no issues, but cannot ping the firewall, while the problem exists. It is running AVG for anti-virus, and has not had any virus/trojan issues, nor has it had issues on a similar home network (without the firewall, though with a home router) tested alternately with testing on our network. I have made sure there are no IP conflicts. No other device on the network has displayed this behavior.

The firewall logs show nothing interesting on the trusted side, other than when the problem laptop is set up for port forwarding, the firewall logs a consistent drop of connection every minute or so, lasting 3 to 5 seconds. This happens regardless of whether the connection is wired or wireless.

All computers are running the same TCP/IP configuration (with obvious differences for DHCP/static IPs), the same network settings, basically Windows default with few, if any, changes.

The only correlation that I can see is that sometimes when either Xbox is being used, the laptop will have immediate problems. However, I can find absolutely no conflict there, nor come up with any reason why this would be.

Can anyone assist?

Thank you very much!

-Brian

Are the DNS addresses 204.127.203.135 and 216.148.225.135 proper, these appear to be overridden in the configuration.

Re: 1 out of 5 PCs on the network has latency/connectivity problems

Have you tried booting in safe mode with networking to see if that changes the symptoms? If so, try disabling all the startup applications with MSCONFIG and then add them back a few at a time until the problem surfaces.

Re: 1 out of 5 PCs on the network has latency/connectivity problems

DNS entries are proper, they are the same other machines with static IPs utilize.

I have not booted in safe mode at this time, we will try that next.

Thanks!

Re: 1 out of 5 PCs on the network has latency/connectivity problems

We are currently having difficulty loading profiles in safe mode, without which we are unable to connect to the network.

Re: 1 out of 5 PCs on the network has latency/connectivity problems

After further testing, the following has been discovered:

There are no problems testing the wired connection while the problem exists for the wireless connection. There was a problem with the wired NIC configuration causing an issue previously which was mis-identified as the same problem being seen with the wireless connection.

So there are no issues whatesoever when connecting via ethernet.

The problem is infrequent with the wireless connection. It seems to be a packet loss problem moreso than latency. The connection has about 25%-50% packet loss going from the WAP to the firewall.

After searching further it seems that there may be a general problem with the wireless NIC - it is a Dell 1390 Broadcom WLAN card. We are installing updated drivers now and will provide the results after further testing.

Thanks!

-Brian

Re: 1 out of 5 PCs on the network has latency/connectivity problems

Updated drivers have made no difference. The wireless connection still drops 25%-50% of packets at times, and at other times has no issues. The other wireless devices in the home have no issues.

Any ideas?

If it's not wireless interference, the wireless hardware may simply be broken.
