Can't connect to internet
Hi,
for past three days I can't connect to internet. Me and my sister we use the same modem and router for our laptop internet connections. Though she can get online using her laptop, I can't connect to internet using mine! My laptop is picking up signal (excellent) from our secured network connection. Sometimes my wireless internet connection even shows that it is connected. But then when I try to open up a page using IE or firefox, it says "internet explorer can't display the webpage" or "unable to connect." Also the little icon at the bottom right hand side of the screen indicating whether I am connected or not is also suddenly gone. I have tried the commands: netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip reset reset.log and restarted my computer and everything. I have diabled the network connection and re-enabled. I have "repaired" the connection. I have tried resetting my modem and router. Nothing works for me, but the whole time, my sister's laptop connects to the itnernet. This is really frustrating. Please help! Note: I am not awesomely savvy with computer jargons. Urgent help would be really appreciated! |

Re: Can't connect to internet
Try pinging your IP address and DNS server from your laptop. See whether or not they give reply.

Re: Can't connect to internet
START, RUN, then type PING 192.168.1.101
Do the same thing with your dns server PING 192.168.1.1 Check whether you and your sister's laptop is connected: Try pinging your sister's IP address. (you can find your sister's IP add by pinging ipconfig from her laptop). See what they tell you. |

Re: Can't connect to internet
You have a lot more than networking issues here. I think you need to start by solving some of the basic Windows issues before you attack networking specific issues.
Can you post an IPCONFIG from your sister's computer?

Re: Can't connect to internet
The basic TCP/IP looks fine, but with all the other issues, you need to address those. If you've been unsuccessful in fixing them, you may need to install Windows again on the machine.

Re: Can't connect to internet
I agree with Johnwill. You have to get these other issues fixed. Try a repair install first. Here is a link:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XP...install.htm#RI I would also check for virus and spyware problems. If you can not fix this with the repair install or no viruses are detected. I would do a complete reinstall of windows. Thanks, Bill

Re: Can't connect to internet
Uhh... well, I tried the run command as suggested.... didn't quite work.
Also Bill... what if I have lost my installation cd for windows? I had installed it more than 1 year back, and can't quite place it. Is there any other way to fix this problem? |

Re: Can't connect to internet
Without a XP Cd I do not think you will have a chance. It sounds to me you still have corrupt or missing XP files. Can you post the make, model, s/n # or tag # of this laptop?
I maybe able to come up with other options with this info. Thanks, Bill
