SMC Wireless trouble :(
Hey there,
Well, to start i had a accesspoint in my kitchen wich my modem was conected to, but it broke. But built in to my modem, is a wireless aswell (heh heh lucky) and i configured that and put a WPA encryption on it (because my neigbor was stealing my internet). All of my computers conected to it fine using the windows wireless networking tool. But one computer, is using an SMC Utility. The utility was an older version and did not suport WPA encryption, so i downloaded the newer version... Hardware: 'SMC2802W 2.4GHz 54 Mbps wireless PCI adapter' Driver version: 3.0.11.1 Application Version: 1.0.2.2 But heres the digg, i set up the program properly, set in th encryption password and stuff, but when i conect, the windows Networking thing sayes limited or no conectivity, and the browser dosn't work. I am sending packages, but not recieving any. But the problem lies with the IP, the IP starts with 169.254 wich aparently means that i am having problems connecting to the DHCP server. But im not 100% sure what that means, nor am i sure how to fix it. Any ideas? Kindest regards, Chup |

Re: SMC Wireless trouble :(
First off, what is the make/model of the router, what's the version and patch level of Windows in use on the problem machine?
Did you get the drivers installed properly for the SMC adapter? Do you see any errors in Device Manager? Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: SMC Wireless trouble :(
The Router i am using is a Netcomm 'NB5Plus4W ADSL2+ Modem router Router'
And the computer i am having problems with is running 'Windows XP Home edition (5.1, Build 2600) (with SP2)' Here is the IPCONFIG report.. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\User>ipcofig /all 'ipcofig' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. C:\Documents and Settings\User>IPCONFIG/ALL Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Tegan Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 6: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : SMC2802W 2.4GHz 54 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-04-E2-E2-D4-80 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.126.103 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Like i said....It looks like its the DHCP server. Something els i found interesting, is that i am running the exact same wireless card in this computer, with the exact same driver version, but on this one there is no utility, so it just runs through the windows one (witch in my opinion is way better). So, if i take the driver components from system 32 in this computer, couldnt i just run them on that computer and use the windows wireless networking tool? Or is thers some way i can imput the right IP adress and gateway and all that (beccause i know what they are). Thanks in advance, Chup |

Re: SMC Wireless trouble :(
Actually, if the other machine is successfully connecting to a DHCP server, there's no reason this one can't. Entering the configuration manually won't solve the connection issue.
Let's try this: TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot the machine. If that doesn't help, I'd like you to disable encryption on the router, and see if you can connect that way. If so, we'll work on the encryption issue.

Re: SMC Wireless trouble :(
I got cranky with it today, and bought a D-Link DWL-G122 Wireless usb adaptor, and i conected it up and it ran fine, i had internet on all 3 of my computers. But now,the internet has suddenly stopped on two of my computers (the one i got the d-link for and another one running the smc card i mentioned above)
but, the strange thig is, it sayes its conected, it sends and recieves packages, i can ping the modem fine, but i cant run any applications requireing the internet. When i try to sign on to MSN messenger, the trouble shooter appears and tells me theres a problem with the DNS and the Key Ports. i have entered in the WPA passcode and everything, and it conects, it sayes i have good signal quality and everything. device manager sayes there are no problems with the devices. It cant be a coincidence that 2 computers have the same problem, so i would say its linked somehow. I have a txt document attached of the ip config and pinging the modem. One other thing to note is that i took the D-link from the computer that im having trouble with, and put it in the laptop i have and the same problem occured. The 2 computers im having trouble with are identical except for the network adaptors (one is running SMC2802W 2.4GHz 54Mbps Wireless PCI card and the other is running the DWL-G122 USB D-link.) Thanks again, Chup |

Re: SMC Wireless trouble :(
What "trouble shooter" are we talking about?

Re: SMC Wireless trouble :(
Try these simple tests.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: PING 216.109.112.135 Tell us the results. PING yahoo.com Tell us the results.
