Networking between XP and Vista
Okay here is the problem.
I have a network set up of 3 computers.. my laptop (wireless, XP Media Center Edition), my gaming computer (wired, XP Professional) and my media computer (Wired, Vista Home Premium) all routed through a linksys router. Right so my two XP computers can see each other fine, but my XP computers cannot see my Vista computer.. BUT the vista computer can see my two XP computers after a short while (for some reason seems to take awhile for it to pick it up.. sometimes it doesnt pick them up at all) So I am completely baffled by this. .I am sure there is something obvious I am overlooking. Though I do have another small problem My two wireless (Playstation 3 and Laptop) seem to get IP conflict errors.. and whenever I turn on my PS3, it knocks my laptops wireless out for a few seconds.. my X-Box 360 (wired), wont even connect at all if anything else is turned on (laptop, PS3, gaming computer, media computer).. So anyway I can fix these two problems? if you need anymore info just let me know. |

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
1. Check Linksys DHCP service, make sure that it's enabled
2. Configure all your devices, including PS3 & XBOX to be given IP addresses, not static 3. Change the SSID setting on your Linksys...may still be factory default of "Linksys" 4. Change WORKGROUP settings for all your devices to the new Linksys SSID setting |

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
Well one minor little problem with that.. to change those settings you need to be able to get into the settings of your router.. does ANYONE know the default password for linksys routers? I never changed it... it automatically asigns one I believe

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
Okay finally got into the router settings, DHCP is set on auto config.. and it is also listed under enabled, though how do you config devices (computers) to be given IP address and not have a static one?

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
Unfortunately I do not know how to ping computers.. I am very newbie-ish at networking.
Though when I added them all to the same work group "Media Computer" appeared on my laptop and gaming computer.. cept it wont let me connect, it is saying I dont have permission and to contact my network administrator. |

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
Oh yeah and when I go to network places, on my XP computers.. the files that I am sharing on my media computer, do not show up at all.. in fact nothing shows up from the media computer.. my XP computers only 'see' each other

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
Start, Run, CMD
PING <computer name> What is the result? On each of the computers, please do this. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: (exactly as stated, note the space between the name and parameter) nbtstat -n ipconfig /all Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
Failure to ping is almost always a firewall issue. Try disabling the laptop firewall(s) and see if you have better success.
Also, you missed one of the commands I asked you to run previously, the nbtstat -n

Re: Networking between XP and Vista
I noticed that the firewall blocked my ping attempts on both laptop and gaming computer (both the XP boxes) but not on the vista media computer.. thing is I have the same firewall on all three of them (Windows Live OneCare) ... so what is the problem? ive tried turning all the firewalls off before.. but that didnt seem to make the XP computers pick up the vista one
