No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
Hello...
I have a BIY windows machine [DT] connected to an IBM X41 Thinkpad [LT] via a R45 reverse cable. Both computers can interact w/o problems. The DT is connect to the Inet via a DSL modem, and can browse the Inet w/o problems. The LT can browse the Inet via a WiFi connection w/o problems. Both machines run XP-SP2 w/o problems. The Problem - the LT cannot access the Inet via the PtP network. I have turned off all firewalls and antivirus programs on both computers, and the LT still can't see/connect to the Inet. In the LT browser I get the message, "Server not Found." ICS has been activated on the DT for the PtP network. On the LT, under my network places\entire network\, there is a heading "Web Client Network." Clicking on this heading yields the error message, "Unable to browse the network. The network is not present or not started." I can ping verizon.net on the DT successfully but not on the LT [through the PtP connection]. I can ping the DT from the LT via the PtP connection [expected since the PtP network is working]. I need help/insight on why the LT can't connect to the Inet via the PtP network. I've spent hours on this with no success. I've played with settings that I never new existed, etc. Frustrating! Any and all help most appreciated. Thanks in advance. ...robert Last edited by Robert Strickland : 09-22-2007 at 04:29 PM. |

Re: No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
How about the exact make/model of the broadband modem? How are you connecting wirelessly without a router? What's the purpose of ICS here?

Re: No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
Thanks for your time in answering.
The DSL modem is a Westhill 327w [Verizon supplied]. The wireless web connection on the IBM X51 is via a local unsecured channel [?]. No idea where it comes from. ICS is on because, somewhere/somehow, it seemed from "all sources" that it should be on. I'm don't know if that's true/false. ICS is on for the local PtP LAN, not for the desktop-modem connection. Hope this helps. Again, thanks. ...robert |

Re: No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
Let's see this for both computers:
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
On the Thinkpad, do this.
Create a file in notepad named NODETYPE.REG with the following contents: You should have 3 boxes on the bottom in NOTEPAD. 1)Filename : NODETYPE.REG 2)Save as type: all files 3)Encoding: ANSI If you do not change it from txt type to All files type, then the file will actually be NODETYPE.REG.txt, this won't accomplish the desired result. ------------------- Use text after this line ------------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters] "NodeType"=dword:00000001 ------------------- Use text before this line ----------------- Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question. Reboot the system.

Re: No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
John...
Been away for a week. Can I make these changes directly to the registry without the intervening file? Working with the registry is not a problem for me. ...robert |

Re: No Inet access from laptop via XP PtP LAN
Sure, all that script does is run regedit to make the change.
