Connected but no browser
Hi, I have a SMC2802W Wireless card. I have an excellent connection to the Free Public Wireless (54Mbps). I have Windows configure my wireless networks. I used to be able to connect to any internet service in range (old house). I moved and now I have a better signal but I cannot pull up a webpage even though I have a good connection. When I try, the dreaded "cannot find server' page appears. When I try to repair connection I get the TCP/IP not enabled on this connection. Please Advise. I have Windows XP on a GatewayPC.

Re: Connected but no browser
You may need to run a winsock repair or fix the TCP/IP stacking.
First off, try the following: Go to Start > Run > Cmd Enter these two commands, then reboot: netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt You can also try downloading this too which may help: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Re: Connected but no browser
I downloaded the winsockxpfix. Now when I try to repair the connection I get kicked off my wireless connection. I still am able to get an 'excellent connection' to "Free public wireless". I have both windows to configure wireless settings and the smartcard WLAN utility. The utility gives me the ip address, submask and dns of the Free public wireless-169.254.77.32, 255.255.0.0, and 192.168.2.1, respectively. In addition to the free wireless, there are a few other networks (not Adhoc like the Free public), that I can get connections to. When i view connection there are packets being sent but none, or few, getting through. I did have to do a complete system cleaning of my computer and reinstall the operating system , drivers, etc after a nasty virus or something or other, about 8 mos ago. Do you think this may have had something to do with my computer's inability to pull up a web browser even though I have great wireless connections?

Re: Connected but no browser
Aha, there's your problem.
When you receive an IP address beginning with 169.254.x.x this tells us that you are having problems connecting to the DHCP server. Whenever your computer can not reach the DHCP server, it will give you an alternate local address; prefixed with 169.254. There are a few reasons why this could happen. 1) Faulty ethernet card 2) The DHCP server you're trying to connect to has run out of IP addresses 3) The DHCP server has assigned IP addresses already, but your computer didn't pick it up. Just to check your adapter is connected properly, go to command prompt and run: ping 127.0.0.1. If you get a reply, then we know all is well with that. You may also run: ipconfig /all - that will clarify that you aren't seeing a DHCP server or if DHCP is somehow disabled. Perhaps try reinstalling your network card drivers as well, then open command prompt and type the following two commands: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew

Re: Connected but no browser
If you have XP-SP2, the winsock fix you downloaded is NOT the correct fix. The previously posted fix was correct for SP2.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot the machine.

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me with this! |

Re: Connected but no browser
Right click on My Computer, click on Properties. Once that pops open, select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. Make sure that your PCI card is fully installed properly. If it is, right click on it and uninstall. Reboot the machine, and navigate back to Device Manager. Right click on the PCI card, and update drivers. Reinstall the drivers for the card and reboot once again.
When you get back, run command prompt and enter the following command: ping 127.0.0.1 You should get a time reply if the card is working fine. Also run a tracert on the DNS servers: tracert 39.9.212.2 tracert 38.9.212.2 Please also paste a log from the TCP/IP restacking. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Re: Connected but no browser
No, I didn't. It was the first suggestion I made on this thread in post 2 - I am wanting the log from the restack.

Re: Connected but no browser
Hi, I was able to do the winsock repair (netsh winsock reset catalog). When I tried the -netsh int ip reset reset.log- nothing seemed to happen, it just pulled up another command prompt. When I typed in -netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt- it also just brought up another command prompt. So maybe something did happen?
In any case something seemed to work( I reloaded my SMC CD as well). I did the ipconfig release/renew. I am able to get a browser through my SMC utility, if I do not have Windows configure my connection. This connection comes and goes and is not constant. Hmmmmmm. I feel there is a break through! Getting closer......... |

Re: Connected but no browser
It would have created a log in C: drive. Go check and there will be a 'Resetlog.txt' file there.

Re: Connected but no browser
Okay I looked at the file. It seems to be exactly what I cut and pasted to my previous message (looks like a reult.txt file). But! I have a browser and so far I am able to do things like check out this message from you, going strictly wireless. I will see how it serves me for the day and if no problems then maybe we can consider it fixed! I am so far very happy and so appreciative of your help; and of course I shall show it by a nice donation....I will keep you posted. Frances

Re: Connected but no browser
Well that was short lived. I have a connection showing on my SMC utility albeit a poor to fair one (no browser, but Windows does repair my connection with no problem when I switch to Windows configuring my connection- I go back and forth to see which will do the job, Windows or SMC). Do you think the problem now could be my SMC utility itself? I have a linksys wireless G router that my cable guy said I needed to connect to the free wireless. I tried (no go),and the router info said I needed a connection to high speed internet (which I am trying to avoid! I want to get rid of the one I have now),in order to work. Will this router pick up wireless, and do you think I could get a better connection if I hooked it up (again)?
