Adding wireless router to wired network
OK, I'm attempting to install a wireless router on top of an already existing wired network.
Here's the setup: Phone line -> DSL modem -> Motorola BR700 Router Motorola router -> switch x16 Motorola router -> 2nd server machine Motorola router -> Netgear Wireless router netgear wireless router -> wireless signal I have done everything I can think of in the config, but I can't get connectivity between these two. I'm certain I'm just missing something in the basics; anyone want to help out? |

Re: Adding wireless router to wired network
Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.
Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected! This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Re: Adding wireless router to wired network
You're welcome. I have two of them connected to my primary router this way, it's worked fine for me.

Re: Adding wireless router to wired network
Just to clarify, I set the router #2 up to be 192.168.1.254, for example, gateway of 192.168.1.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0
and on router 1, specify for the mac address of the wireless router to have the set ip of 192.168.1.254, and make sure the DHCP range ends before that, say 192.168.1.100 ? and on router #2, set the LAN ip to 192.168.1.254? |

Re: Adding wireless router to wired network
Actually, you don't specify anything on router #1, it'll be transparent to you. Are you trying to filter on MAC addresses, don't do that? You also don't need any gateway or subnet specification, since you're configuring it as a wireless switch. It really is simple, and it does work.
