[SOLVED] Cannot get on line
Greetings -
I have an HP Pavillion ze2000 laptop running windows xp service pack 2. I have always been working on line via the HP Wireless Assistant. This assistant picks up a wireless network and I have been using that network reliably for over a year now. Today I cannot seem to get online however I am looking at the wireless network connection status and it says I am connected, with 175 packets sent and 67 received. I have been connected for the past few minutes. The problem is that when I bring up a browser window, the browser window cannot connect to anything on line. Similarly when I run my virus protections they cannot get online to update their respective definitions. Frankly I am stumped. Any ideas what I can do? ps- note added... I also brought up the network connections window and I see that under the LAN or High-Speed Internet bar the Wireless Network Connection Icon says connected Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. When I try to repair that connection I get a popup that says Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Disabling the wireless adapter. Make sure your network adapter is properly installed. On the top of my keypad there is a button that I think manually disabled the adapter. The button says "I" and when pushed the "I" becomes blue indicating the adapter is enabled and if it is not blue then the adapter is disabled. (Not sure that this helps) Last edited by vewdodude : 09-05-2007 at 02:42 PM. Reason: Adding another note |

Re: Cannot get on line
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
Make/model of the broadband modem. Make/model of the router (if any). Connection type, wired, wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.) Make/model of network card or wireless adapter. I'd also like to see this: Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Cannot get on line
Thank you for replying to my post.
So this is where I will show how lame I am. Hopefully I will supply you with the right stuff. I went to the control panel and then opened the system properties window. I went to the hardware tab and clicked on the device manager. The Device Manager window I take it shows me all of the hardward devices on the puter. I expanded the Modems window and it says AC97 Data Fax SoftModem with Smart CP. I left clicked on that and a properties windoe came up for this item. Device status says it is working properly. There is no router. Connection type is wireless and there is no encryption being used. It is a clear channel. I then clicked on the Network Adapters. There is a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN and a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. When I click on the wireless connection icon on the lower rhs of the screen the general tab does say I am connected, there have been 342 packets sent and 158 received. I know that doesn't help you much... When I click on the properties of this window in the general tab it says to connect using the Broadcom device. Sorry to manually enter this but I am not able to transfer the data at this time. My transcription is reliable though After typing IPCONFIG/ALL: Windows IP Configuration Host Name ...............................PC559021741205 Primary DNS Suffix .................... Re: Cannot get on line
Sorry to reply to my own thread but I was browsing other reports to see if there were any problems similar to mine and one of the first steps was to ping something, (forgive my ignorance) so I went and pinged 216.109.112.135. The response on the command window was as follows:
Pinging 216.109.112.135 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=95ms TTL=55 Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=94ms TTL=55 Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=95ms TTL=55 Reply from 216.109.112.135: bytes=32 time=94ms TTL=55 Ping statistics for 206.109.112.135: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum =94ms, Maximum=95ms, Average=94ms Don't know if this helps or not. |

Re: Cannot get on line
Well I guess you can mark this resolved but I am not happy with the solution. I parsed through more and more postings and I noticed one guy that said he lost internet connections shortly after he had installed AVG antivirus. Sure enough I had done that recently, a few weeks ago. On a whim I decided to uninstall my AVG and here I am on line using that same computer.
Not sure why or not but I did want to let you know. Thanks for the help! |

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot get on line
Try installing it again, it shouldn't corrupt the network. I'm using it here...
