Situation: Crossover cable connected to PC2 from PC1, seperate NIC connects PC1 to DSL modem (speedstream 5100a) Both PC1 and PC2 are running Win XP Home sp2 with firewalls turned OFF. Network wizard has set up my ISC. I can ping both PC1 and PC2
Problem: When I enable the NIC on PC1 which connects PC2 with a crossover cable I lose activity to DSL modem, which in turn means no internet. If I disable the NIC on PC1 w/ crossover to PC2 I resume having connectivity to net on PC1. What can I do to get a shared internet connection to PC2? All help is apprieated and thanks in advance. ![]() |

Re: Crossover cable network not working
Since you already have a router, the Speedstream 5100a, all you need is a $10 Ethernet switch on the front to connect the two machines to. This will give you Internet access and file/print sharing with no kludgy ICS in the mix.

Re: Crossover cable network not working
I know i could use a switch to network them (i thought a switch or hub did not share internet over a network?) but I really want to figure out how to use the crossover cable for the network since there is only 2 PCs. I am correct in thinking that a crossover cable can share a DSL connection if plugged into a seperate NIC on the host computer, right?

Re: Crossover cable network not working
Once again, for want of a $10 switch, you are going to accept the kludge of ICS? That makes no sense to me. The switch doesn't share the Internet, however since you have a router already, that's the part that allows the sharing. The only thing about that particular router is it only has one port, so you need your own switch to connect multiple computers.
