Dlink network problems

Hello, recently I have set up a Wireless network using products from Dlink, dir-635 router and dwa-142 adapter. However every so often the connection stops on the PC that has the dwa-142 wireless adapter. I am running windows vista and would desperatly like to know of a fix for this problem. I have installed all the latest vista updates and drivers blah blah for it but it still disconnects randomly.

Re: Dlink network problems

Do you know this is not simply wireless interference? Have you tried changing channels on the router? I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.

Re: Dlink network problems

I am having problems configuring the router also, that problem being that I can't.. lol. When i attempt to run anythign to configure it it just doesnt work, tried re-installing but after the 6th install I dont think its gonna help any :). I had read about mac addresses and thing like that but wasnt quite sure.

The thing is, I can be working fine for 2 hours, then I could maybe go afk come back try to type a message and then it just stops and goes to limited connection to the network without internet access, maybe that could help in identifying the problem? Thanks for your reply.

Re: Dlink network problems

Have you updated the router to the latest firmware? Does the router die if you connect with a wired connection?

Re: Dlink network problems

I updated everything yes. The router seems to be fine but I am more interested to hear about channels as I think there maybe some interference or something, every so often the connection to the wireless PC slacks almost to hault then it speeds up again. I am new to wireless networking and networking as a whole so I am unfimiliar with alot of things :)

Re: Dlink network problems

In that case, I'd change the channel in the wireless configuration setup in the router. I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.

Re: Dlink network problems

So, imagine if you were telling someone with no idea how to change channels, how would you go about it :P

Re: Dlink network problems

I'd download the product manual from this link: http://support.dlink.com/products/vi...ctid=DIR%2D635 Changing the channel is covered on page 25.

I'd also pick up the latest firmware while I was there.

Re: Dlink network problems

Hello again John, tried all those channels and every so often the speed drops to 1 mbps and wont reconnect to the internet but just stays connected to the router. Seems like a signal issue?

Re: Dlink network problems

I think if upgrading the firmware doesn't do it, I'd contact D-Link and complain. Maybe time for a new router.

Re: Dlink network problems

I just bought it :( But, i think the problem lies within the DWA-142 adapter, as there is a laptop on the network also and it gets good signal no matter what happens. Do routers come with a specific default channel such as 6 or are they random?

Re: Dlink network problems

Some have an "auto" setting that attempts to find a clear channel, others come set to a default channel. Channel 6 is a very popular default.

If another wireless station works well, put them together and see if the problem is location or the machine with the DWA-142 adapter.
