Hi,
I originally posted this in the Internet Explorer Section but Go To The Power has advised me that the networking forum may be best to help me. My IE7 is unable to display web pages. I am running a cable modem (Virgin Media) through a belkin Pre-N Wireless Router. The Main PC is connected to the router via ethernet, and I have a laptop and another PC connected via the wireless connection. (I get the same problem if I connect the modem directly to my main PC) My laptop & other PC can successfully connect to the internet. I spoke to my ISP and they took me through a few tests in the Command Prompt and advised me that the problem is that port 80 on my PC has somehow been blocked. (This all started after a powercut) For info, I run Norton Internet Security as my firewall. Can you help me identify what has caused Port 80 to be blocked (ISP state it is not them)? and how I can unblock it? Regards Happysapper ![]() |

Re: Damsel in distress, can anyone help?
Disable Norton firewall and see if that doesn't restore sanity.
Also, let's see this: Try these simple tests. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: PING 216.109.112.135 Tell us the results. PING yahoo.com Tell us the results. I'd also like to see this: Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi,
I've turned off all aspects of Norton, and it didn't have any affect on my being unable to access the internet from my main PC. I followed your instructions in the Command prompt and obtained the following results: ping 216.109.112.135 Pinging 216.109.112.135 with 32 bytes of data: Destination host unreachable. Destination host unreachable. Destination host unreachable. Destination host unreachable. Ping statistics for 216.109.112.135: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss), ping www.yahoo.com Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Does this help in any way? Regards Happysapper ![]() |

Re: Damsel in distress, can anyone help?
OK, you have no connectivity, that's why you have the 169.254.x.x address.
Let's try a stack reset, I'm assuming XP-SP2 in the absence of any specification. If that's not correct, please post back. TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot the machine. If that doesn't do it, I'd check the cable, the port on the router/switch, and perhaps for a bad NIC next.

Hi,
Thanks very much for your time. I have reset WINSOCK entries & reset the TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, and rebooted the pc as you advised and this didn't resolve my problem. I have also connected my laptop via its ethernet connection using the ethernet cable for the main PC. This worked so proving that the cable or router are not the problem. Therefore my next step is to buy a new NIC and see if that resolves the problem. I'll report back when I have installed it and let you know whether it resolves the problem. Re: Damsel in distress, can anyone help?
Hopefully, the NIC is the answer, not much else in the mix at this point.

Well my luck is just not there at all.I bought a new NIC & installed it but had a few problems with it starting. I decided that the whole PC was just running like a bag of the proverbial, so I thought I'd flatten the hard drive and restore my windows xp. But the pc couldn't run the system restore disc, and after the expensive telephone call to PC-world (LOL I know don't blame me it was a prezzy) they are going to replace my hard drive yippee as it seems there is a problem with it.So once that's up an running, I should be okay with the new NIC and I can get back to only having to use this laptop when hubby's got the damn footy on the TV LOL.Thank you very much for your time and patience. Kind Regards Happysapper |

At last. Life & the internet. You are not going to believe what the problem was.
It was some corruption in the software on my pc. I tried to restore using the PC world disc (don't go there lol) & it seemed hard drive had now died. That was fixed and when the restore disc was run the NIC miraculously come back to life. Just thought I'd update you, after all your advice & support Thanx very much Regards Happysapper ![]() |
