Fixed-IP Win2KPro PC to PC connection
Hello All,
I'm doing some testing of our company's equipment and nothing seems to work. As a sanity check I tried a TCP/IP hyper-terminal connection between two PCs. I've done this in the past when one PC was on Win95 and the other on Win98 by setting fixed IPs for each and connecting with a cross-over cable. Now, with Win2KPro on both machines it gives me a 'Network cable unplugged' error. I've tried different cables and using a switch between computers, to no avail. About the only way I can get it to work is by connecting each computer to the network, letting DHCP do its job and then quickly unplugging from the network and plugging the computers together through a cross-over cable. Of course, this means I have to change the IP addresses on the hyper-terminal programs to match what DHCP picked. What's going on? Can anyone help me, please? |

Got it!
Hello all,
Thanks to everyone that was trying to solve my problem . I checked a number of other threads and found a reference to an article by DumberDrummer - http://ddsfiles.freeprohost.com/NET.html - tried it out and it worked great. It seems that, regardless of what you are using your network connection for, Win2KPro requires you to have IP addresses on the DNS fields, otherwise it just won't work... Who knew. Well, there it is, hopefully somebody else reading this will benefit from it.
