networking xp and vista (crossover cable) unidentified public network

Im on my last nerve, i have 2 computers one xp sp2 and one with vista, connected together by and ethernet cable (crossover cable), and they just dont seam to work together, firstly the computer shows up on the vista computer as an unidentified netork, and everytime i reconnect it defaults back to a public network,
the xp comp has no internet connection and it really does not need to use the net from my vista comp
my vista comp connects via a pcmcia iburst card, which works, i just thought it should be mentioned in here
i have a few drives and folders on my xp comp that i have set to be shared but dont always show up on my vista comp

p.s. there is no virus software on my vista comp but i have one care v2.0 on the xp comp,
