Ello, this is my first post here so hello everyone
![]() Well, i guess i should just go right into it: A few months back, my internet was running great, very fast and more than enough for me. Then one day we had a power surge beucause of strong winds, and the next day when i got on the internet it was muuch slower. I could no longer stream youtube videos without pausing (they used to load much faster than they played. I could no longer download at speeds higher than 40 kb/s (i used to get at least 300kb/s at minimum). As you can see that was quite a decrease in speed, but i figured it couldn't last, maybe the surge caused a problem for the provider or something i figured. But the problem persisted. Here i am a few months later, and the problem had not been resolved, it was still just as slow. So i figured that maybe it was something on my end that i could help. Maybe the surge messed up some of the hardware for the internet itself. So we got a new cable modem (Motorola surfboard SB4100) and since we got the new modem, the download speed has improved a little (i now get around 60-70kb/s, and i can watch most youtube videos without stopping). Unfortunately this increase is not enough. I want to try to return my internet to its' former glory. But im not sure where to start at this point, so i'll try to explain how my house is set up so that you can try to help: In my house, the cable modem is downstairs in a box in the wall, and it is connected to the cable, and the uplink of the modem goes to a 5 port 10/100 linksys network hub, and the hub connects through ethernet cords through the walls, to special ethernet ports in the walls so that connecting a computer to the modem can be done in any room in the house, by simply plugging an ethernet cord from the PC to the wall, without a middle man. So i hooked up the new modem just like that and noticed a slight increase in speed, but not enough. So then i tried replacing the hub with our wireless router, in case the hub was messed up. No speed increase. So i put the hub back. I tried leaving the wireless router out of the equation. No changes. Also, i know that it can't be the network card beucase of the fact that the internet slowed down ever since that day for every device using internet in the house. The laptop, the 2 desktops, even the playstation portable. So it can't be the network card. Also, the fact that the internet slowed down for all of those devices at the same time tells me that there is no malware involved, and that it's either something with the hardware, or a problem with the ISP themselves. I have also tried hooking up my desktop directly through the cable modem (no difference). I have also noticed that when i run a speedtest (speedtest.net is the one i use, if someone thinks there is a much more accurate one i will take it and post the results) i get a high latency every time (usually 300+) which is a bad thing isn't it? is there a reason for that? And could the latency slow down internet? What is the normal latency? Here are my results: http://www.speedtest.net/result/168766021.png now as far as i know, those speeds are in proportion, but they are low... most internet speeds for cable internet are easily over 1,000kb/s on this test, why would mine be this slow now? And why would the latency be so high? Is there ANYTHING I can do that may help me on this issue? Any Help on this issue would be GREATLY appreciated, i will try pretty much anything to get the old speeds back. |

Re: Internet speed question.
Oh and i'd like to add one more small thing:
I also notice that lately when we bought a new modem, though the download speed had increased, pages still load slow, i will click a link and pages used to pop up and load, now i click a link, and the page takes anywhere from 3-10 seconds to pop up, but usually when it pops up it's almost completely loaded, but it still takes way longer than it should... |
