D-Link wireless adapter problem

My Alienware computer had recently had a few problems. The most recent is now it has no internet connection. I'm pretty sure I overheated and broke the graphics card, so I did a few things, and switched it back to the intel graphics card that came with the computer. But now, the Air G Plus D-Link is randomly gone. I tried to reinstall it, but everytime the windows install wizard comes up, it gets to the part where I tell it where to look for the drivers, and it says I have to connect to the internet THAT I DON'T HAVE because of this problem.
Also, I'm running on XP. The adapter worked for about two years before this problem.

Any help?

Please supply the following info.

The name of your ISP and country of residence.
Make/model of the broadband modem. If dial-up, please specify.
Make/model of the router (if any).
Connection type, wired, wireless.
Make/model of network card or wireless adapter.
Make/model of your computer (motherboard if home-built).
Version and patch level of Windows, i.e. XP-Home SP2.

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

make/model of broadband modem: Actiontec MI424WR (router/modem combination we got when Verizon installed FiOs)
ISP is still Verizon FiOs
Make/Model of Router (we have a router hooked up to their router/modem as well, an AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624
Connection Type: Wireless G
Network Card: D-Link DWL-G122 (USB connected)
Computer: Alienware, sorry no specifics
Windows XP Home, SP-2
Located in New Hampshire, United States

Also, we have other systems on the network that are working fine (laptops, Xbox 360), so the error is definitely with installing and getting working the D-Link USB device, not a general networking error from the router/modem/routermodem

Thanks!

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

Hmm... I'm not a big fan of USB for networking, I've had lots of issues myself working with USB networking.

Why not run a cable to the system for the setup and see if that makes them happy about Internet access?

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

I tried that. Now it just says it can't find the software and thus it cannot finish connecting the hardware, to paraphrase. If I'm honest, I think now the USB adapter is broken.
Now, what would you suggest? should I just connect via LAN? Is that easier generally?

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

It's always easier, more reliable, faster, and more secure to use wired connections. In point of fact, the only thing that wireless has going for it is the lack of the wire!

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

Alright, thanks. I think the problem might be with the motherboard, though. We just tried to install a new video card and it isn't working, so I think the entire motherboard is fried. Is that a possibility?

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

I doubt it. If the MB was truly fried, you wouldn't get anywhere. Are you sure you have all the chipset drivers installed for the MB?

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

Pretty sure. My brother actually ended up fiddling around with the BIOS some more, and now the new card is installed. The wireless part still isn't working, though

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

I think the wireless may be cured by a new PCI wireless card too.

Re: D-Link wireless adapter problem

Haha, yeah, probably. We're actually now just looking into getting an electrician down to wire up our entire house for internet.

Thanks for the help, John!

Wired is always better than wireless. The only thing wireless has going for it is no wires.
