Network Problem

Hi

I have a wireless network between a PC with Windows XP Pro and a laptop with Windows Me using a Belkin Wireless Modem/Router.

The Internet access is fine but there was always a problem with the file and printer sharing over the network. It frequently failed to work, giving a message that there was insufficient memory. The problem was resolved by changing a value in the registry - this was obtained by linking to Microsoft from the Event Viewer error message.

With hindsight I should have made a note of the registry key and value that I changed just in case I needed to try different values between the original (default) setting and the (maximum) figure I put in its place.

I realise that this might be a rather sketchy question but has anyone any idea what that registry key might have been?

Re: Network Problem

Hi

That's the problem. I cannot now find the error message - all I can recall was that when I clicked on the link to Microsoft the suggested solution was to increase a value in the registry, which I did.

The problem now is that whilst the networking functions OK both the PC and Laptop seem to run slower and I wonder if I should have increased the value gradually until the problem was resolved rather than to the maximum. Foolish of me not to have made a note of the key that I altered - a mistake I shall not repeat!

Re: Network Problem

Well, could it be IRPStackSize? http://winhlp.com/WxNotEnoughServerStorage.htm

FWIW, if that value is sufficient to stop the error from occurring, you won't gain any more speed by increasing it. I'd be looking for different issues if you still have problems.

Re: Network Problem

Hi

Thanks for the link - that was indeed the value I altered and it is set as recommended. It could well have been Norton Internet Security that was the culprit originally.

It would also seem that this is unlikely to be the reason for the "slow" PC/Laptop.

Re: Network Problem

Hi

By slow I mean that everything seems to have slowed up recently - none of the applications or programmes seem to load or run as fast as before. I have carried out every possible check for viruses/spyware etc but both machines seem to be clean.

I was concerned that by increasing the value of the IRPStackSize it had perhaps slowed the machine down in other areas.

Re: Network Problem

That has no measurable effect on any speed you would observe.

Re: Network Problem

Hi

Many thanks. At least I can rule that out.
