setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
I have a Linksys wore;ess g router. I would like to set it up just for my wireless HP printer server. The new N router is just purchased has a higher security level than what my printer supports. I was hoping to be able to do this without connecting to the internet. Any thoughts on this and how to start to approach this would be great. No sure how to install the router with out being hookedto the dsl modem.
I think what I am trying to do is to use the 2nd wireless modem as a printer server. I probably have everyone confused including myself. thanks, mike Last edited by Mikey2323; 07-10-2007 at 08:58 AM. |

Re: setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.
Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Re: setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
I'll give it a try. No sure I totally understand but think I can figure it out. I would configure the secondary router with the primary one turned off? I'll give it a try and let you know. Oh what does SOHO stand for?
thank you very much Mike |

Re: setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
You do the initial configuration of the secondary router connected directly to a computer with no other connections. Once you have it configured, you can connect it as described above.

Re: setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
Did you configure it as I posted previously? What is connected to the secondary router? If there's only a printer, what Internet connectivity are you talking about?

Re: setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
Sorry, I didn't read you post correctly.
I did finally get the secondard router configured. Now I am having trouble getting the wireless printer configured. Can you tell me what the gateway should be set at? I set it for the IP address of the secondard router and it seemed to go farther into the installation before it stopped. I am using infrastructure. Any help you could give me would be helpful. I have to admit I've leared alot about networking inthe past week. However, its just enough to become dangerous. thank you for your time mike |

Re: setting up a second wireless network just for my printer
You need to set it for the primary router's gateway. The secondary router is transparent here, you don't use the routing capability at all.
