XP to VISTA through a ROUTER(DI-524UP)

I have a laptop with Vista Ultimate and a Desktop PC with XP HOME SP2, my internet is connected to my desktop by USB and i connect my desktop to my wireless router and share my desktops internet connection with my laptop. My router is a D-link DI-524UP.

I have recently added a new hard drive to my Desktop PC and I wanted to be able to open it on my laptop. I right clicked my new hard drive in "My Computer" on my Desktop PC. And everything appeared to be working(on the Desktop PC end). Then I went to my laptop and clicked on "Start", "Network" and it only lists my PC and my router.

I then plugged my cable (from the router) and put it directly from my Desktop PC to my laptop, avoiding the router altogether. and repeated "Start", "Network" etc. and it then listed the name of my Desktop (shared)Hard Drive.

Is there a way I can get to the shared drive through the router and not just when im directly connected to the Desktop PC.

Re: XP to VISTA through a ROUTER(DI-524UP)

Let's see this for each machine while connected to the router.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: XP to VISTA through a ROUTER(DI-524UP)

Here's the proper way to configure a wireless router to connect to another router or to a machine running ICS (which is the same configuration)

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

SOHO - Small Office, Home Office

Your ICS machine is the "primary" router, and the router is the secondary router in the description.
