what is a spanning tree

when i use wireshark i get a lot of STP Protocol from a source Dell_9f:e1:aa
what is that. in a capture for about 3 minutes i get like 75 row of that

A spanning tree is a network protocol which provides a loop-free type of network for any LAN or bridged network. The Spanning Tree Protocol, which is also referred to as STP, is defined in the IEEE Standard 802.1D.
