Wifi peer-to-peer

Hi All,

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I couldn't find it with a "search".

I have 2 computers with wifi NICs. Both XP. Can I get them to peer-to-peer network as if I had a crossover cable joining them? Then use one as an ICS server?

Any tips for a young player?

Thanks Dins

Re: Wifi peer-to-peer

I am a bit confused why you use the word "wifi" but talk about a cable connecting the two. Can you clarify? Then I can probably help you :)

Let's say you meant a standard 10/100 NIC that is not 802.11 (non-wireless). Yes, if one computer had TWO NICs, then you could acquire an IP address from your router (or cable modem etc...) and use XP Pro's ICS and share that internet connection via your 2nd NIC to the other PC via a crossover cable.

I have done this in the past but instead of using a crossover cable, i used a simple netgear switch. One thing I had to keep in mind is when getting an IP address from my router, I had to make sure it was on a different subnet other than 192.168.0.x/24 because I think my default, ICS will assign IP addresses on that same subnet and I couldn't see where to change it. It is probably a registry setting. So I had conflicts until I changed the address scope on the router to a different subnet.

Re: Wifi peer-to-peer

Ad-Hoc connections can be used for ICS, just configure ICS and specify the wireless connection as the "host" connection. The other station is configured for Ad-Hoc connections with automatic IP and DNS addresses.
