win xp keeps restarting/stop error

I just bought this HP pavillion 04 running windows XP pro+sevice pack 2, and after 4 days of no problems, it just started shutting down and restarting when i tried to connect to the internet, and only when i tried to connect to the internet. I finally realized it was the net waiting that was causing this because when i shut net waiting off, it works fine. I'm wondering if net waiting is just not compatible with xp or if there is a problem with the net waiting program that i should be aware of, i used it on my old pc running win98se and could never get it to suspend my connection so i could answer my phone, not to mention it would not allow me to disconnect from the internet once connected, i had to shut the pc down completely to disconnect. I do have a network card installed along with a modem, i have to use the modem since dial up is all that is available out here in the sticks, could there also be a conflict between those two devices? any help would be appreciated as i am not real familiar with this OS yet. here is what i do know about it...win XP pro+SP2,1.2gig celeron processor,256Mb of RAM,and the hard drive is a maxtor,6 gig (very small!) I don't know if this is a major problem i should be worried about, but i read the error report which stated they don't know what causes it. so if anyone has any helpful info on it, please let me know. thank you )~TITAN2~(

Re: win xp keeps restarting/stop error

By the looks of it, it seems like there's a driver conflict on the system with this software. But the HDD lack of space is also pushing it a little too much for my comfort. Restarts are usually hardware errors though, driver errors will throw up a BSOD.

Yes, 6GB is very small, too small for XP SP2. The minute you install 80 odd updates waiting, 4GB will be lost to the root WINDOWS folder, around 1GB for System Restore and about 250MB for the Page File leaving you with less than 1GB free, which'll switch System restore off too.

That and the 256MB are very low to run a XP SP2 system adequately.
