Hi,
I am trying to setup a home network through (what I think) is an odd setup (although I only know the basics). What we have is the main computer, connected to a D-Link router (which connects to the net), which in turn is connected to a Belkin wireless G router. [ ] = PC <> = D-Link () = Belkin Wireless G -- = connecting cable ^ = wireless connection | = Internet connection _ = Floor boards . = spacer ;) .......| [ ]--<>--() I then have a PC downstairs which has a wireless connection to the Belkin Therefore, my setup is thus: .......| [ ]--<>--() _____________ ..............^ .............[ ] Here is the problem; Upon trying to follow Home Networking Tutorials, I cannot access the Belkin router from either computer, even though I am typing in the IP address. I have also tried pinging it... however it keeps timing out. For extra info: I have internet connection to the PC downstairs, but I am trying to setup a WLAN so I can share files. If anyone could help, I would be rather quite greatful. Thanks -Theodoic Last edited by theodoric; 06-12-2007 at 03:30 PM. |

Re: Cannot access router
Is the DLink set as the default gateway? Also, what is your addressing scheme? Let me see if I got this right, upstairs is wireless, down stairs is wired, right?

However the upstairs doesn't. Basicly, the Belkin is connected to the D-Link, which is connected to the Upstairs (this) PC. ... if that is an intelligible response :P |

if default gateway means the one accessing the net, then yes. Downstairs is wireless, upstairs is wired. i.e. Downstairs connects via Belkin (wireless), whereas upstairs connects through the D-Link (wired). Also, addressing scheme? (Sorry, I suck when it comes to this stuff). Sorry for being confusing :P Last edited by theodoric; 06-12-2007 at 03:40 PM. |

Re: Cannot access router
Ok, so is the internet connection through the dlink router or the belkin router?

Re: Cannot access router
So the dlink needs to be set as the default gateway. Is it set so for the belkin as well as both pcs?

Re: Cannot access router

The D-Link connects to our modem, and the Belkin is just there so the wireless PC can connect to the net. in other words; The Upstairs PC is connected to the D-Link with an Ethernet Cable. The D-Link is connected to the modem. Also running off the D-Link is an ehternet cable connected to the Belkin. Since the Belkin is the only router to pick up wireless, the downstairs PC connects via a wireless USB card, to the Belkin. I hope this clears up the confusion. |

Re: Cannot access router
Yes, it clears it up. As Eric stated, can you access the configuration of the Belkin? If so, does it show the default gateway address as being the ip address of the dlink?

Re: Cannot access router
Well that's my problem. :P I can't access the Belkin config (I'm assuming it is accessed by typing the ip into a browser? If not, I have no idea where the CD is, because the Belkin is lent to us by my older brother who doesn't need it atm)

Re: Cannot access router
You can connect the belkin to a pc using an ethernet cable, then web browse to it to see the configurations.

but how do I do that without disrupting the internet connection? Also, I have just been informed that the wireless is setup as an access point... unless you already figured that out :P |

Re: Cannot access router
Well, if the dlink is the one providing internet access it shouldn't disrupt it. Even if it is an access point we need to know how it is configured so we can trace down the problem.

Re: Cannot access router
You have a pc that is wireless, right? I am assuming you do because you are using a wireless router. So it should not be connected to the network. So you should be able to safely use that pc. It should have a ethernet card in it.
