Quality of Verizon DSL constantly declining...
I suppose this is the correct forum to post this in, if it is not I'm sorry, but here it goes:
I've been using Verizon Home DSL for several years now. The first year or so was fine, it was a good DSL that was fast enough for me. However lately I have been having major problems with it. For one, sometimes when I boot up my computer or if I've had the computer on for a long time (or I've had it in sleep mode for a long time), when I come back and try to browse the internet I cannot connect to any website. All of my browsers say that the server cannot be found and to check my internet connection. The weird thing is, I can still play online games, so I am connected to the internet still, in some form at least. Like I mentioned I play online games, and I have noticed a major decrease in performance when it comes to playing online now. I experience frequent spiking to many servers that I play on where I use to have a fine connection to. I thought maybe I have spyware or something, so I ran scans of both Spybot and AdAware and both only found several things, I fixed the issues and the problem persists. I also make sure everyday that I have my anti-virus, Kaspersky, up to date, and I run a scan about once a week, again it usually doesn't find many viruses and if it does I delete them and the problem still persists, so I'm convinced this issue doesn't have to do with spyware or viruses. I contacted Verizon about it and they said perhaps it was the filters I had installed on my phone lines. Also, I forgot to mention that several months ago I had the problem that every time someone called my house I would get disconnected from the internet. I mentioned this to Verizon and they told me about the possible problems with the filters, it made sense so they told me to remove the filters. I did, but the problem still remained. Interestingly enough, the problem with getting disconnected when someone called just randomly went away after a month or so, even after filters both on and off. Other than that the only thing Verizon suggested I could do was try defraging my hard drive, and since I did realize it's been a while since I defragged, I decided to give it a shot, but it made no noticeable difference. I'm just so frustrated and tired of Verizon at this point... anyone know of anything I could possibly do? If it matters at all my modem is a Westell VersaLink Model 327W. Thanks. |

Re: Quality of Verizon DSL constantly declining...
From the disconnection when someone calls, I'd also suspect sub-standard phone wiring and/or filter issues. Here's my RX for the best interior wiring for DSL.
Purchase a DSL splitter and install it at the telco service entrance. Run a direct line from the DSL port on the splitter directly to the DSL modem. Connect all of the other phone instruments to the telephone output of the DSL splitter. All of the DSL analog side wiring should be CAT3 or better twisted pair from the telco service entrance to the DSL/ADSL modem. You can use one of the twisted pairs in CAT5 cable if you have that on hand. This is as good as it gets for DSL installations, and will usually solve in-house wiring issues.
