Resolved: Vista PC / Windows network paradox
I'm adding a new PC with Windows Vista Ultimate to my Windows network hosted by a PC running XP Professional and getting very strange behavior. It's an HP Pavillion s7700y Slimline.
For some reason the Vista machine is unable to obtain a dynamic IP address from the DHCP server (the XP machine that is on 192.168.0.1) so I assigned a static address (192.168.0.5) to be able to access networked resources. However, the Vista machine still can't access network shares, although it can access the shared Internet connection. Now that's just the opposite of what happens when an XP machine is given a static IP address - with XP machines they can access network shares but not Microsoft shared Internet Connection. But maybe the behavior for Vista clients is supposed to be this way? The Vista machine can ping the network host, but the host cannot ping the Vista machine, and running Advanced IP Scanner doesn't see the Vista machine either. Neither machine has Windows firewall turned on. I have unplugged and repowered the Ethernet switch (a D-Link DGS1024D) many times to investigate each anomaly... Any suggestions? |

Re: Vista PC / Windows network paradox
Is this Netopia the USB only model? Let's see this for both the XP and Vista machines.
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here.

Re: Vista PC / Windows network paradox
John - Sorry to take so long to reply, but it became apparent the DHCP server was having some issues that warranted reinstalling Windows. Once we decided to take it offline to do that, we brought in another identical machine to use as DHCP server and that solved the network issue affecting the Vista machine.

Re: Vista PC / Windows network paradox
That's one way to fix things.
