Resolved: Cannot receive IP or hostname
The notebook worked perfectly few days ago. But now it doesn't.
My win2000 notebook finds the wireless network automatically and connects to it, but it cannot find any other machines on the network. Internet doesn't work. Internet used to work perfectly even with straight connection to cablemodem trough USB. Now even that doesn't work. It sends packets but cannot receive any. When I set the IP manually, it can connect other computers on the wireless network and ping them. Filetransfer works fine, but internet doesn't. It can even ping my D-Link DI-524 wlan/router/firewall, but cannot enter configuration trough internet explorer. The notebook has a A-link wlan card and it has been working fine before this. So far I have done this: -Reseted the computer, cablemodem and D-link DI-524 -Reconfigured the D-link DI-524 -Tried other connection methods (straight cablemodem trough USB) -Triplechecked connection settings -Manually configured IP There's something really weird, or is there? It won't receive packets and cannot receive IP or hostname. Any ideas what to do? The network has two laptops and the other one is working just fine (win xp) with the D-link box and cable modem. |

Re: Cannot receive IP or hostname
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.
For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot the machine. If you still can't connect, let's see this: Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here.

Re: Cannot receive IP or hostname
RESOLVED!
Since my OS was Windows 2000 those commands you mentioned wouldn't work. I believe I did the same manually? I tried ipconfig /renew and ipconfig /release It generated error message "An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket." 1. Delete the corrupted registry entries On the computer that has the corrupted registry entries, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services . 3. Right-click Winsock, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes. 4. Right-click Winsock2, and then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes. 2. Remove TCP/IP on a Windows 2000-based computer 1. Log on to Windows as administrator. 2. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties. 3. Under This component uses the following items, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Uninstall. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove TCP/IP. 5. Restart your computer, but click No if you are prompted to let Windows enable a protocol. 3. Install TCP/IP on a Windows 2000-based computer 1. Log on to Windows as administrator. 2. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties. 3. Click Install. 4. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add. 5. Under Network Protocol, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK. 6. When the protocol is installed, click Close. 7. Restart your computer. After reboot the notebook was working just fine. The whole process is described in Microsofts support document http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817571 |
