XP network bridge
I have a XP pro /sp2 box that had a wireless card(d-link) and a nic(3Com). I have them bridged and the bridges' ip 192.168.0.101 mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1. The DNS is 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 . I didn't set up the LAC or wireless connection, they are both set to automatically obtain address's, before bridging them. I have another box which is a Linux (Slackware) machine. It's configured w/ ip 192.168.0.104 mask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1. Now I can ping from Linux to XP and XP to Linux w/ no problems. I run into problems w/ the Linux box not being able to access the net. It will have access then just lose the connection, but I'm still able to ping XP box. The XP box has no problems accessing net since I configured bridge w/ static ip's (b4 it would lose router connection w/out static ip), and I can ping the Linux box no problems. There has to be some type of conflict within the XP box and I don't know where it could be. Can anyone point me in the right direction or help w/ this problem. I did search this site and googled but found nothing that dealt w/ my problem specifically.
Thanks for any and all help. |

Re: XP network bridge
Ok, I did find out that the problems lies with having WPA2 w/ passphrase enabled on the router. I turned off the encryption and no problem w/ net access on the Linux box. Can anyone shed some lite on this for me.
Thanks for any help.!.

Re: XP network bridge
Hi, and welcome to TSF!
![]() What Linux distro is on the Linux machine? What desktop environment are you using? You usually need to install a separate package to add WPA support to Linux. Most of the time, it only comes with native WEP support. In the mean time, I would at least switch on 128-bit WEP. It is hackable, but it is better than no encryption.

Re: XP network bridge
Thanks for you timely response.. I'm sorry I thought I mentioned my linux distro.. It's Slackware 10.2 and at the moment I use KDE 3.4 for DE. I have wpa_supplicant.0.4.9 package installed w/ wireless tools 27 package as well. But, I'm not accessing the net through wireless card on slak box. I have XP setup up temporarily until I finish w/ wireless setup on slak box. I'm not sure about why linux would need wpa support for a non-wireless access? Can you explain further.
Thanks for your help..!..

Re: XP network bridge
Sorry, you did mention the distro, I missed it.
Anyway, is the linux machine connected wirelessly? If it is, you should use at least version 0.5.7 of the Wireless Assistant (wlassistant). This will provide WPA/WPA2-PSK support.

Re: XP network bridge
I appreciate the nfo on using wpa_supplicant.0.5.7 I will try that on my other slak box ,which dual boots w/ XP (two drives) to get wireless working, but as to your other questions - no . The slak box in question doesn't have a wireless card. It is using the XP box to access net.
Any help is appreciated... Thanks
