internet for 1 minute after boot or IP refresh only

Hi all.. Ive spent a few hours on this tonite and have drawn a blank.. hope someone has an idea..

Its a friends machine (XP Home SP2).. other computers in the house are wired to the router, this machine is via on wireless via a DLink Wireless G router.

When I got there tonite, neither Firefox nor IE would go to a webpage. He told me that he could play Counterstrike online, but nothing else would work. I found I *could* ping outside his LAN (www.google.com for example)..

I ran Spybot and Adaware.. neither could contact their servers for updates, spybot returned a 10055, No Buffer Space Avail error. Neither found anything wrong (other than a cookie or three), nor did AVG.

I checked his page file settings, was forced to 620mb, I reset it to machine managed (had found that googling).. I ran netdiag on the winsock setup with no errors showing..

I then found that if I refresh/renewed the IP, Id get another minute of internet.. and I could do that over n over to get another minute..

I booted up in Safe Mode and had no issues what-so-ever with internet.. managed to download updates, run scans, surf the web.. you name it.. but nothing I could do would make it work in normal boot.

Giving up, I packed up the box and brought it home so I could work on it while searching for ideas.. and the stupid thing *appears* to work ok in MY wireless network.. Ive had 30 minutes of internet now and no problems..

Has anyone any other suggestions or experience as to whats goin on here?

thanks,

Brett

Re: internet for 1 minute after boot or IP refresh only

huh.. well, it worked just fine again this morning for awhile.. but I was skeptical as I hadnt actually changed anything, so I reset the TCP/IP via the Microsoft Guided Help and updated the drivers on the wireless card and now the fault has returned..

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Re: internet for 1 minute after boot or IP refresh only

heh.. 1 more fact to the odd pile..

IE - no internet access no matter what
Firefox - the google search bar will process searches very quickly and supply results.. but if I type an address into the address bar, or try and click on any of the links in the search results, nothing happens.

It's starting to sound like malware/spyware, have you done complete scans? You might consider posting a HJT log.

Please follow this HJT Log 5 Step Process to post a HijackThis log in the HijackThis Log Help forum here.
