no internet
At my local high school the internet on some of the dell computers in quting. You can ping websites and different servers within the network but no internet.
We use a DHCP server, VOIP, and different Trendnet switches. We cannot even remote access he server from the computers. When a user logs on the internet works for about a minute then quits. I put a new motherboard in the computer, tried differnt cables, changed the LAN settings and nothing worked. We use workstation all in one computers. The only thing left to do is call Dell. Can anyone help? |

Re: no internet
John here, customer advocate at Dell headquarters.
By pinging websites and other computers within the network, you have verified that the problem is not with your NIC. If when pinging you used the URL instead of an IP address, you have verified that your Dell system is communicating with the DNS servers provided by your ISP. If your system is unable to display a web page but can ping websites using the URL, this most likely means the problem is related to IE settings or other software problems. Hardware swapping will not address this. The first thing I would try is clean boot troubleshooting: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434 If the problem persists in safe-mode with networking, the next step would be to disable browser add-ons: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...a71033.mspx#EO In the worst case scenario, you may have to reinstall the TCP/IP stack: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259 Let me know if this helps!

Re: no internet
If you can ping other machines on the network then the network card itself is working correctly. My guess is some kind of configuration error, or firewall setting is causing the problems you are running into. Neither of those are things Dell support can help you with because we did not set up the network at your school.
My recommendations: * Check that the DNS settings are correct (bad or missing DNS prevents addressing by name, but using IP addresses still works) * Verify the system has the correct gateway IP address (if it is wrong/missing, you can reach other systems on the same network but cannot reach anything outside that network) * If any system works correctly, check its settings against the systems having problems to see what is different. For more details, you will have to talk to your network administrator or whoever installed/configured the network for the school. [edit] Apparently, we both grabbed the case at the same time ... ;) John's suggestions are also good troubleshooting steps to find out where the problem with your network connection it at.[/edit] Larry Dell Customer Advocate
