All has been fine until a few days ago. My cable internet connection is fine, no problems downloading(512kbps), but it takes forever to load pages. Even problems with instant messengers connecting. I have ran multiple virus and spyware scans, registry programs, optimizers, and so forth. But have come up with nothing. I have no firewall as well. I have no idea what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am running xp sp2, 512 ram, 60gb internal, 250gb external(used for storage only), and FF(same problem with IE). I tried it in safe mode with networking and it worked for about a day. Now safe mode is screwy. I also updated flash and disabled all addons with no glory. I have no clue what is going on. PLEASE HELP! This is getting pretty ridiculous. It's like a really lame dial up connection(if it even loads).

Re: Internet problem
Can you tell us something about the environment? Cable, DSL, what? Make/model of the modem, any router, and the version/patch level of Windows in use on the problem machine.

Re: Internet problem
It's cable. The modem is Webstar by Scientific-Atlanta. No router. I'm running XP sp2. It's updated constantly by Windows Update. Like I said, all was fine until a few days ago. No new software, nothing. Just all of a sudden went stupid.

Re: Internet problem
You may have failing hardware, but my top suspect is still malware. Can you post a HijackThis log for us?

Re: Internet problem
Are you using any file sharing (p2p) programs?
Go to this page and measure your ping times: http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp Is there anyone else using the same internet connection (more than one computer hooked up)? |

Re: Internet problem
It wouldn't load the page.... GR But I went through cmd prompt and pinged www.pcpitstop.com and got this

Re: Internet problem
Your ping times seem to be pretty good.
Let's start with some basic stuff. Try unplugging your modem for about 60 seconds. Also, you might want to contact your ISP. Your computer "might" not be the culprit. Safe mode with networking should have worked, but as you explained, it only worked for a little while. Also, check to see if there's any updated drivers for you network card. |

Re: Internet problem
You have a funny idea of what "good" is in relation to PING, here's what I get.
![]() C:\>ping 64.29.201.21 Pinging 64.29.201.21 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 64.29.201.21: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=242 Reply from 64.29.201.21: bytes=32 time=47ms TTL=242 Reply from 64.29.201.21: bytes=32 time=44ms TTL=242 Reply from 64.29.201.21: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=242 Ping statistics for 64.29.201.21: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 44ms, Maximum = 47ms, Average = 45ms In addition, the dropped packet would indicate an issue that probably should be dealt with. How about signing up for an account at www.dslreports.com and running their line quality tests. Post a link to the results here.

Re: Internet problem
Anything between 100ms-200ms is considered "Good" and anything less than 100ms is "Great". Mattusaf had 36ms, 73ms, 163ms, and a time out (which is not unheard of).
I admit, they're not "perfect", but they're still "good". Last edited by tosh9i : 05-03-2007 at 02:45 PM. |

Re: Internet problem
Here is the results. I also ran the speed test and it recommended for me to change my rwin between 5480 and 13140. http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2222752 I have also already done the basic stuff like unplugging the modem and checking all connections. All of my neighbors have the same ISP and are having no problems. |

Re: Internet problem
The PING test seems to indicate you're getting a lot of dropped packets. This will play havoc with connections. I suspect that's the real cause of this problem. I think it's time to contact your ISP, and save a printout of that run to show them.
