Asus Attansic onboard lan problem

Hello,

I am experiencing a problem with the lan chip (Attansic 10/100/1000) on my new ASUS motherboad (P5B-E).

It will not connect to the network at 100, only at 10... When I try 100, the card momentarily connects at 100 then constantly tries to connect at 1000 !?!

I tried all the possible settings for "Media Type" in the card configuration. I also tried a few cables.

I have a few other computers on the network, all working at 100. Previous motherboard (P5LD-2) also worked fine at 100.

Any idea ?

Thanks !

Re: Asus Attansic onboard lan problem

Thanks for the response to the private message I sent to you.
I'll share my thoughts here too for the benefit of others...

I have the same problem with my new Asus P5K-V with the 'Attansic'
motherboard Ethernet chipset.

... I'm thinking that it must be a hardware
problem - I believe that the LED that indicates the network
speed should come on even without an operating system or
driver loaded!

My belief is based on a test that I just performed. I booted with
a non-windows floppy disk (MEMTEST86) so there are certainly
NO drivers loaded for the LAN.

A cheapie 10/100 PCI LAN card that I installed has a 100Mbps LED
that comes on immediately when connected to the router.

If I plug the same cable into the motherboard LAN connector - no LED.

When booted into windows XP the same applies - PCI ethernet card
works at 100Mbps, but the Motherboard LAN runs only at 10
even though the Attansic driver is installed, and the device manager
says it's working fine.

I don't currently have any 1GB equipment so I couldn't test that.

A similar test on a DELL PC at work shows that the LAN speed LEDs come
on even while the PC is in the process of booting!

A google search found another with the same problem on the Asus forum

Re: Asus Attansic onboard lan problem

AH HAH !

I have finally discovered the cause of the problem!

Apparently there is a subtle incompatibility with my router.

The router is a Netgear RT314 - It's rather old, but it DOES
support 10/100 so it SHOULD work, but it doesn't.

I made two tests that confirmed my solution.

Test #1: I plugged the ASUS's LAN connector directly into
another PC with a crossover cable and the 100 Mbps LED
came on immediately. Note that you don't really need a
crossover cable since the newer LAN ports are auto sensing.
I tried a straight through cable and it worked too.

Test #2 I plugged the ASUS's LAN connector into a cheap
Belkin network switch and it also caused the 100 Mbps LED to
come on immediately.

None of the tests involved a Gigabit connection, but I'm happy to
get the 100 Mbps connection for now

Re: Asus Attansic onboard lan problem

My router is a LinkSys BEFSR41 and supports 100Mb no problem with all the other computers... (?)

I will check for an firmware update for the router maybe ?

Re: Asus Attansic onboard lan problem

My Netgear RT314 router works at 100Mpbs with all my other PCs and ReplayTV, but The combintation of Asus P5kV and Netgear RT314 is a bust!

Its at least 5 or 6 years old. I updated the the Router firmware to the latest 3.25 a while ago, and it appears that this is still the latest version - and since the router is 'EOL' (End of Life) I don't expect any updates.

Oh well - out it goes - I'm just happy that I have a solution.
