Cannot access some Web Sites

Greetings from Greece. It's my first post here and I would appreciate any help. I came across this forum, when I was trying to collect info regarding the following issue:
I have a Netgear router DG384PN and I have connected it with my PC (running Win XP SP2) via a typical netgear 10/100 PCI Card. Also I have Norton Internet Security.
Before I had just a usb-modem and I had no problem to visit any website.
Now whenever I try to connect to the following 3 sites (and maybe there are many more, that I have not discover yet) I got no responce at all (the network just trying to load the pages for unlimited time without any result!) The 3 sites are:
www.plaisio.gr
www.yen.gr
http://62.103.162.162/hrimaw/
It's greek pages, I had no problem at all to visit them before, and I cannot figure out what is happening...Any suggestions? Thank you all in advance

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

Well, they were pretty slow for me, but the first two do eventually load.

Did you just install Norton Internet Security? I'd be looking at that before the router.

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

No unfortunately(?) Norton was there before and has caused me no problem so far. I also can access these web sites from the PC at work with no problem (ok, the speed may be a little slow, but we are used to it here...), but from the home PC...

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

Try this:

Start, Run, CMD

Code:
PING www.yen.gr
Post the results here.

For reference, this is what I get:

C:\>PING www.yen.gr

Pinging egov.yen.gr [195.167.19.139] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 195.167.19.139: bytes=32 time=139ms TTL=44

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

In the command prompt, type:
Code:
tracert www.yen.gr
Post the results here.

For reference, this is what I get when I do that. Note that some timeouts in the trace are normal, since not all nodes respond to the trace request.

Ok, I'm going to try it. Here are my results:

..and from the second command:

Tracing route to egov.yen.gr [195.167.19.139]

You don't have a problem with your connection there nor connecting to those sites in general.

It seems their server is slower at times and when its heavily loaded, traffic is slower thus your browser times out finding their server. (?)

Seems like Norton also maybe have some influence here.. have you tried disabling the Norton firewall and running the XP SP2 firewall instead to check?

I tried the sites just now and it connected instantly.

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

After your reply I tried to connect with these sites, disabling Norton. Unfortunately after a few minutes I only got "the page cannot be displayed". Immediately after that I've tried to connect to these sites with my PDA (PALM Tx) using the same router via WiFi and (MIRACLE!) the PAlm can display the pages...Can you believe this? I'm desperate...

I don't have a clue, you have connectivity to the site, so I can't imagine why you can't access it.

IIRC Norton is a shark - well nearly. It doesn't stop interfering until one removes it completely.. usually. On Mozilla forums, that is the advice you will hear from software developers unanimously.

I remember this from my Thunderbird problems very well.

Get into Safe Mode with Networking, like this.

Leave Norton Security Suite off. It's risky but not enough for quick troubleshooting. Enable the XP SP2 firewall though. Check you have a connection by just visiting Google and briskly navigate to one of these sites you're having a problem with.

See if it gets through. Apart from Norton, I don't really know why it would block you when PING and Trace Route is showing otherwise.

Which browser are you using BTW?

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

Dear friends, I followed every instruction, but to no avail...Even in the safe mode with networking etc, etc... I cannot access these three (I hope only these are the problematic ones!) sites. BTW I have IE v6.0.2900.2180 (default browser) and I have also tried with the latest firefox (again no results) Thank you very much again for your all your efforts....

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

Just on a lark, try downloading Firefox and see if it works. Perhaps you have the security on IE configured somehow to block these sites.

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

John: Allanon mentioned that the latest Firefox has been tried with no difference in the last post.

If all the internet works, I can't believe why they won't.. unless it's being blocked somehow.

Are you the admin. on this computer? Maybe someone who is has blocked the sites through some security software, or you have a BHO/toolbar that is doing so. :?:

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

Oops, need remedial reading instruction!

Obviously, something is blocking the specific sites for some reason...

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

I am the admin on this computer, but to be honest I have not idea what this BHO you mentioned means. Some kind of adware? I think I' m clear (ad-aware, Spybot...) I also uninstalled Firefox (I was afraid that IE might have made these things to me, because it didn't like the coexistence with another browser) but nothing. Regcleaner after all these, and...nothing again.

Browser Helper Object.

Can you run Firefox in Safe Mode and check? (through start menu)

That's Firefox safe mode not Windows safe mode.

I am thinking... that I'm perplexed.

Re: Cannot access some Web Sites

Sorry for not reverting earlier, but due to heavy workload I didn't have the chance (and the courage!) to try anything new regarding the subject! I'm going to try it this afternoon though and I'll post the results asap!

I once had a similar problem and I remember it had something to do with the MTU (Max transfer unit) setting.... I'll see if I can digg up some info...
