TravelMate2420 wifi problem

hello again!

my friend recently bought an acer travelmate 2420. He completely reformatted the hdd and reinstalled all the drivers. however, there is a problem, whenever he connects to the internet, whether its wireless or wired, his connection starts out fast, about an average 150 kb/s dl, but tit then dwindles to a meager 2 kb/s. it does this to any connection, so its definitely the integrated network problem. Im assuming its the driver, i checked the device manager and there was a question mark beside network controller. the driver always installs incorrectly for some reason and im at kind of a loss. ive also been looking around for the manufacturer of the network chip so i can download the driver directly form their site, but i cannot find the manufacturer.
