Can anyone help?

i dont have much knowledge about computer networking so here we go...

our main comp internet and network are running fine
my comps network is running and connected but the internet isnt...
my brothers comp is also running fine

ive tried running the network setup wizard on all the comps (a million times), tried swapping cables, restarting the comps, turning the modem and ethernet off and back on. still no luck

all the comps work apart from my internet!

it also says, 'invalid address' for my local area connection, if i then run the wizard it goes off and the network runs fine but theres still no interent?

dont know if this matters but its a 'SIS 900-based PCI fast ethernet adaptor' if that means anything to you? lol

anyone got any ideas?

thanks! matty

Re: Can anyone help?

Have you turned ICS (internet connection sharing) on?

Are you using crossover cables (if its a computer to computer network).

Have you set the network ip addresses of the computers (so that theyre static)?

Re: Can anyone help?

first of all what type of network is it.

Is it computer to computer (ad-hoc), or does it involve a router/switch/hub.
Is any part of it wireless? Where is the internet plugged into?

Re: Can anyone help?

we've got a NexHub HD080

theres a cable coming into the 'uplink' port from the ntl broadband box, then theres the cables coming out of 3 of the other ports to the computers

Re: Can anyone help?

You wont need crossover cables or ICS then.

Open up command prompt (start > run > type cmd) and type "ipconfig /all", press enter. Then right click the command window, click select all. Then press enter.
Then press paste in a reply on here.

Re: Can anyone help?

That was without any computers connected at all, just the ethernet from the modem into the adapter.

Re: Can anyone help?

You have an Ethernet hub, and to connect multiple computers to the Internet, you need a broadband router. Change that and you'll be all set.

Re: Can anyone help?

Ive got another network card and fitted it and the computers seem to be talking to one another. I changed the IPv4 settings on the comp with vista on and they could see each other.

I just need to know how to set the ivp6 settings if thats what its called for the net to work?

Anyone know?

:)

Re: Can anyone help?

Once again. Unless you have an ISP that offers multiple public IP addresses (very rare unless you pay for them), you will only get one connection without the router. Since routers are cheap, I'm at a total loss why you resist this suggestion so much.

Re: Can anyone help?

My mate came round today and sorted it all out. I understand that we may need to buy one in the future so one of the computers can be switched off and the other still have access to the net.

The reason why I was reluctant to get one is because I'm purely skinted from buying a new computer lol didnt want any more expense

Thank you for your help :)

Re: Can anyone help?

You can afford a new computer, but not a $20 router? OK...

Re: Can anyone help?

The router I want to get is £30 and that'd be more in dollars, so it isnt a case of OK
