crossover network problem
I have 2 laptop computers, a dell 8200 and a sony vgn a270, both running windows xp. I am trying to set up a network between the 2 using a crossover cable with static addressing. I have set the sony to the address 192.168.0.1, and the dell to 192.168.0.2. The dell can ping the sony, but not the reverse. I switched the addresses with the same result. I have the default gateway set to 192.168.0.1 on both machines.
I read where the gateway should be deleted with a crossover network, but I don't know how to do that. I've disabled firewalls and virus protection on both machines, and that didn't help. If I set both machines to the same IP, XP complains, so it somehow knows the other computer is on the network! It just can't ping it, or access it in any other way. Both computers can ping themselves. Any thoughts??? Thanks in advance, eric |

Re: crossover network problem
Okay, I figured out how to remove the gateways on both machines. this did not help either.
stumped.... I can SEE the ping coming from the sony on the dell, in the systray icon, but the dell is apparently not returning it. When I disable and re-enable the dell LAN, it immediately shows thousands of packets sent and recieved, but the sony, (which has the internet connection via dial-up) shows only a few hundred packets sent. |

Re: crossover network problem
Okay, I shouldn't be too quick to pat myself on the back.
I have both machines pinging each other, but can't get file sharing. I've enabled my data partitions on both machines for full file sharing. The sony can see the dell (in network places) but not its data partition. The dell can't see the sony at all. When I double click on the dell from the sony, it says I don't have permission, and to contact my administator. My administrator doesn't know squat ;) thoughts?? thanks, as ever. eric |

Re: crossover network problem
Besides having windows firewall deactivated just for this testing. Are you aware of any other firewall program that is running, like one that might be a part of your antivirus software?

Re: crossover network problem
alright, I can see both computers now. despite what my firewall says, it will not allow traffic between machines unless it's disabled.
but now, I can't connect because I don't have the dell password protected?? It's running xp pro, does that have something to do with it? |

Re: crossover network problem
When I try to connect to the dell, it tells me I have an invalid user name. I'm logged in as admin on both machines under the same user name, with no password.
what's the hangup??? |

Re: crossover network problem
yeah, they are both on the default workgroup.
I finally got this working, and annoyingly enough, don't quite know what did it. I went through the new network wizard, and it ended up installing a network bridge, and enabling IEEE authentication (was that on all the time? DOn't know!) and after disabling the authentication and removing the bridge, it actually worked. But not right away. Randomly, about 10 minutes later. Go figure. THanks for the help! I'm not sure I won't be back here tomorrow, asking the exact same questions, though ;) cheers, eric |
