got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
I want to make a USB to CAT5 adaptor but I am not quite sure how to wire it. They sell these online for $100+ which only means to me that they are possible to make and use and I am not new when it comes to wiring and making my own electronics work the way I want them too.. lol
Anyway, can someone tell me how wire this up or maybe give me a diagram of how wires are lines up within a female CAT5 plug and a male USB plug?? Dont ask... |

Re: got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
Well, since the two interfaces use totally different signal levels, and one is a differential interface, I'm not sure what the point of this would be. Clearly, this is nothing that would be considered remotely standard.

Re: got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
IMO, the best option is to hook the printer up to one of the computers hardwired to the router, and share it over the network. Any computer on the workgroup will be able to use the printer. The only catch is that the computer it is hooked up to must be on to print, so hook it up to a computer that it not configured to go on standby. If there is a server on the network, use that to host the printer.

Well, that is the best way to save the $100. You could move the printer to any computer on the network, so if there is no room on one, use another.

Re: got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
I'd start by forgetting about plugging your Ethernet and USB together, that's not going to work. You can pick up a wireless print server for a lot less than $100, I got one for $20 after rebate a couple of months ago. Just keep your eye on these sites for deals to come by.

Re: got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
Looks good to me, and it has a gateway/bridge with it as well. I suspect this will be more expensive than a simple wireless print server.

Re: got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
this isn't really related but that Logitech Play Link Wireless Network Extension that I bought at first WORKS GREAT for my Xbox!! LOL, I am very happy I got that now and got it in 2 days and the shipping was free!! No i do not work at the place I bought it from but I am impressed and wanted to express that somewhere since the website doesn't have a customer review section!!
Now I can't wait to get the print server! |

John is right, it isn't just a print server, it is a bridge as well. It is a good deal. You can plug computers and printers into it.

Re: got a test for the tech/wiring guys..
to bad you have to actually plug the computer/laptop into the device for it to work. I'll still use the router and the netgear wireless network card that dosn't seem to work like it should. (this will probably be my next thread) lol
