Confused cat 5 cable

Hi there,

I am having a small problem trying to get my head around a part of my network course. The main problem is trying to get to grips with the definition of segments. On one hand I am being told that a segment is a single cable that only one node can attach to, but on the other hand I am being told that this could be the media used between two networks meaning more than node can attach to a segment? can someone please clarify?

Re: cat 5 cable

- if your talking about network segments a segment is a subset/portion of a network connected by routers. the internet for example is a big network connecting different subnetworks. if your office/corporate network is connected to the internet then your considered a segment. for more info about segments i try google.

Re: cat 5 cable

Thanks for that.
So by your definition a segment using cat 5 cable is only limited by the hardware and software used on the network and not the cable itself.
It might help if I pose the question as I have been asked:
What is the maximum number of nodes per segment? But this question seems to be aimed at the cable that I have chosen to enter as the media.
I have tried searching google but that has conflicting information.

Spence

What is the maximum number of nodes per segment?
- it depends on how you design the network. a segment can contain 1 or more nodes

- try these links
