Personal Home Network Setup

I want to set up a wireless home network between my desktop (Sony Vaio XP Home) and my laptop (Alienware Sentia Vista Home Premium). I want to be able to share files and my printer without having to connect them through LAN or any wired connection.

My PC's network connection is: Internet modem -> Linksys hub -> PC (wired connections).

My laptop uses a built-in wireless network card that picks up the Linksys router.

So with these two different OS's, how can I set up a home network so that I can share files wirelessly between the two computers and also be able to access my printer (connected to the PC) from my laptop?

I tried the Network Setup Wizard on the PC but, 2 problems:
1. My laptop is a Vista, so I think there might be compatibility issues
2. It had an option for creating a Network Disc for different OS's, but required using a floppy disc and my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Personal Home Network Setup

Make a folder on each computer shared.
Put them both in the same workgroup. That also might help you.

Thanks for your help. But what is a workgroup and how do I make shared folders?

Re: Personal Home Network Setup

there we go. that's the problem.

In order for the computers to want to work with the network there has to be a share to give it reason to.

Right click a folder, click on sharing and security.

Good Luck!

So if I set up the shared folders on both computers, they will automatically detect eachother and connect to eachother?

Also how can I share my printer by doing this, as the printer something I can share in a folder...

Re: Personal Home Network Setup

You must enable sharing of a folder for it to transmit it's availablity to the network.
If you look at a network and nothing is shared, you won't see anything. That looks to be the problem you are having.

FOr sharing the printer:

Go to start > printers and faxes

If it doesnt show up there, go to control panel > printers

Right click the printer attached to that computer, click on sharing...
