Wireless router problem

hi, im trying to connect two pc's together using wireless.

I have a linksys wrt54gs wireless router and a wireless card in the other computer.

The downstairs PC (PCA) connects through usb modem to the internet via my usb modem. PCA also is connected to the wireless router using ethernet connection. The upstairs PC (PCB) has a wireless card. I want to connect PCB to the internet using PCA.

I know i need to tell the router about the default gateway and things like that, but are there any tools on the net that will do that or does anyone know how?

the cd that came with the router is pretty useless

thanks

Re: Wireless router problem

PC A must connect to the router and the router connects to the modem. (Both the router and computer don't connect to the modem as you described). Once they are connected (modem>router>computer) you should have a connection to PC B.

The router should have the default gateway, subnet mask, etc already in it. You just need to set the dns address (most likely get dynamically from ISP) and set it as dhcp server. Once you do that and pcb can get online, you'll want to setup your encryption. See: wireless setup

To access router setup, open a browser and type in the access address in the address bar (most likely in the form of 192.168.0.x). Most likely you can find it on a label on the router or in the manual

It's very important that, whenever you change what's on the end of the wire coming out of the modem and/or out of the router, that you reboot both devices. Unplug power from both. Wait one minute. Plug in modem. Wait one minute. Plug in router. Wait one minute. They are the longest minutes in the world but be patient and wait the full minute to be successfull

Re: Wireless router problem

There is no way you can use your router without a modem with an ethernet out jack.
Talk to your ISP about swapping it for a ethernet model.

Re: Wireless router problem

Actually, I think that if you can get the computers talking through the router you should be all good. Routers are typically used to network computers and share an internet connection. For a shared internet connection on the router, you would need a broadband connection, something using Ethernet.

Now, Im not positive this will work, but I think its worth a try (sorry if I got this wrong)

First off, is your modem broadband (dsl/cable), or dial up? If broadband you should connect it to the router. Otherwise, get both comps connected to the router, and access the router (usualy 192.168.1.1 or check your default gateway), disable the DHCP server, so it acts only as a hub.

Now, you should run the windows network setup tool on PC B and tell it, you connect through the internet on another computer.
