Pin Lan Party

Hi guys your advice and info on this item would help me greatly. I play online gaming and am a leader of a online clan called - The [UKFF] I am planing on hosting a Lan Party @ mine for a group of lads who leave close by. Should be fun. I realised I needed to have a bigger router so we can all link up, silly me jumps in on ebay and bids on a cheap hub with 24 ports:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ME:B:WNA:UK:12

What I need to know is:
  • Will this be able to link up all computers to play on a lan?
  • Will it be fast
  • Does it assign ip address automaticly or will we have to do it manualy
  • Am I getting a good deal :)
  • Will it be like just using a router - where we will be able to link up like a network, share files chat etc host lan games blar d blar like that?
  • Is there anything else I need to know?

Please please help us because I would love for this lan party to be a success

Many thanks,

George

Looks like a switch...

No, it won't assign your machines IP addresses- you'll have to assign each computer an IP. I find it's actually easier this way in a LAN party environment where everyone's fairly computer literate.

This will be able to link up your machines without any foreseeable issues. As long as everyone's on the same workgroup, you should be able to share files, have machines acting as servers for the map files and binaries, etc.

Lastly, 20 pounds isn't a bad deal for a switch. I'm hoping it'll be a 100mbit instead of a 10- this will make file transfers faster than the old style switches. It looks like it is,though.

Many thanks, this has put my mind @ rest, I hope I win now :D

I know how to assign ips manually so touch wood should go to play.

As for mps, ive gotta look into it this as I dont want a 10mb one as download and upload speeds will be slow, hmmmmmm where could I find the info to see if its guna be a 100mb one. Also would their be away of getting the internet avaliable over the network when everyones connected to the switch, by using my ethernet modem or connecting the modem to the router then the router to the hub etc.

Thanks for your help so far!

you should be able to just plug the switch into on eof your ethernet ports on the router. if you do that, you should also be able to get DHCP addresses on the network. as far as i know it will work, and i cant really think of any reasons as to why it wouldnt... if everyone is playing games on it, then you might have some speed issues depending on how much bandwidth you pay for, but other than that it should work.

Thank you guys for your speedy replys, Oogitsmelol could do with a step by step off how to do what you said. Im quite computer aliterate, but not when it comes to networking @ this sort of length.

Will just be gaming over the lan, file sharing etc just would be handy to have the net avalible so lads can use msn etc like that no real hard core net bashing, im on 10mb ntl BB

ok, so you plug your modem into the router wan port, and then your switch into one of the ports on the router. you MIGHT need a crossover cable. i dont know for sure, but i would say probably since its going switch to switch. but once you do that, then plug your computers into the ports on the switch and you should be set. using the router, it will probably try to give everyone a DHCP address, so there may be no need to assign static ip addresses. but yeah, after thinking about it a bit, i would be willing to bet you will need a crossover cable to connect your switch to the router. you could probably find them at any computer parts store.

Dude, check it.

One simple router that has DHCP (nearly all routers do) and a 24-port switch will put you in LAN heaven. Just connect the modem to the WAN on the router, plug the uplink into any one of the LAN ports of the router, and do some fraggin'! It'll give you the ability to access the Net from each terminal as well as file sharing.
