Implementing Secure download

- Hey guys how do you implement a secure download via http and ftp.

Neither HTTP nor FTP are encrypted. The only way have secure downloads with http or ftp is when using a VPN to the network on which these services are being run.

If no vpn exists, you could use HTTPS or SSH, a more secure method of transferring files.

It has to be setup on the server hosting the files.

- ok, but you as a client is there a way for you to secure your connections.

A standard web server should easily be able to handle HTTPS. All you really need is a SSL Digital Certificate from a Certificate Authority (CA). You can either create a certificate yourself if you want one for free and self-signed (and self-trusted), or you can buy one from a trusted CA such as VeriSign or Comodo (which has the bonus of already being trusted in almost all popular web browsers).

Adapting something like SSH onto FTP is a bit of a nightmare unless you actually use a "SFTP" server/client. If you just want users to be able to copy files, you can also use something like SCP.
