Wireless Networking - From Windows 98 To XP
Is this possible? I need to transfer a lot of files from a PC that has Windows 98 on it to a Laptop which has Windows XP on it but I'm not sure how to do it at all.
The PC with Windows 98 has this installed on it (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=136479) and the Laptop has built in wireless. HK |

Well, a hub will work just as well. First we need to establish that both of the machines can connect to the internet. When we have established this, we will be able to verify that both machines are connected to the hub.
Next, we will need to verify the IP of the Windows 98 machine. Do this by going to Start - Run and then type cmd in the run box ( if that doesn't work type command). This should bring up a MS-DOS window. next type IPCONFIG and paste the contents of that into this thread. |

The laptop is connected to the PC via wireless at the moment but the Windows 98 PC isn't ever used so Internet isn't connected on there. HK |

Well, there is no way that I know of to create a wireless connection without a medium (like a hub) by just using the wireless NICs. But seeing that you have a hub... this should facilitate and handle the networking portion of it, so it doesn't matter whether one is wireless and one is hard wired... the hub handles all of that. I would first try and get all of the computers accessing the internet. Then you will know that you have established a connection with the hub.

Well I tried connecting the Windows 98 PC to the HUB using a wireless netowrk card but every time ti tried to connect the PC would just crash and I'd have to restart it.
I've no other ideas of how to transfer the files from the Windows 98 PC to my Windows XP PC as I've tried most things: - I tried this wireless network card thing but as I said above it keeps crashing - I tried putting a CD into the Windows 98 CD Drive but it is unable to burn CD's. - I have a USB key which I am trying to put into the USB prot on the Windows 98 PC but whenever I do, the PC doesn't recognise it. What I mean is the virtual drive doesn't appear in My Computer at all. I know that it's not a problem with the USB ports themselves as other USB hardware such as the wireless network card works in it. HK |
