trying to set up wlan (stupid question warning!)

Ok first of all i want to warn everyone that i know nearly nothing about wlan or any other kinds of networking so i might be doing some really stupid mistakes and asking stupid questions..please don't kill me for that
Recently i bought a cell phone which can use wlan and obviously i decided to see how it works. I borrowed an access point from a friend (who went away for a couple of weeks so i cant ask him for help). So i i'm just sitting here without any clue.
Basically what in need is to get internet both on my phone and my pc (i do hope its possible..). My pc uses a cable modem connected via usb so i have a free lan socket which i could use to connect the AP (although i really doubt that it would actually do anything).
Any chance that i could get my internet to work both on my pc and my AP/phone? I'm pretty sure that it would be quite easy if i had a router instead of an AP but i'm not planning to buy one any time soon so it would be great if my problem could be solved with what i have now.
I guess this might be important - the AP is Edimax EW-7206APg and the cable modem is Thomson TCM 325 (it belongs to the ISP though so i cant really do much with it..at least not legally *cough*)
I really do hope that i will find some help and advice here. (and i really hope that if i manage to set up my wlan
my cell phone will be able to use it.. i heard that its still far from being perfect..)
