Having problem with internet speed.. comcast slower than 56k and it is not virus!help
Hey. I am new to this board and have a serious issue with my internet connection. I live in Atlanta GA near emory university and my internet speed is just ridiculous. I ran internet speed check on various web sites and it is barely faster than 56k. At first, I thought it was a virus or some sorts of spyware, but that wasn't the problem. When I bring my laptop to school, it is lighting fast. When I plug in the ethernet line, I have a pop up from the windows on the bottom right corner that I have 100mps connection but it runs slower than freaking 56k. What kind of problem am I having and how can I fix it?

Assume your Comcast connection is a cable modem service?
Make sure you disable the wireless on your laptop to make sure you are not really connected to a weak wireless network and you are really passing traffic to your cable modem. Power your cable modem off then back on to make sure your laptop is really communicating with the cable modem as well. Try entering this address in your web browser http:// line and see if your modem support signal statistics, 192.168.100.1. If it does, post the information back here for review. It sound like you may have a signal level problem with your cable service if the above does not help. JamesO |

Run a route trace to something like www.comcast.net and post the details back for review and comment as well.

well, i don't know what is wrong, but I think it is quiet serious. Comcast account name is on the owner of the house and it is really hard for me to speak to her in person. I would like to fix this under limited circumstances, and I need help!

PC Pitstop's Trace Route utility is a graphical version of the tracert or traceroute command-line program found in Windows and Unix. Using an ActiveX control, the utility sends small "ping" packets from your PC to each hop on the way to an Internet destination that you specify.
Trace Route is particularly useful if you're experiencing problems connecting to a specific site. Simply enter the site below, and the trace will show where performance bottlenecks might be occurring--whether they're at your local provider, the site itself or somewhere in between. Once you discover the source of the problem, you can contact that particular host or provider for more information or to report the problem (see Interpreting Your Results for more on this). For help using the utility or for more information and definitions of the terms used here, see our Help File. Enter the name or IP address of the site you're trying to reach, then click Trace Route. (For other options, see the Help File.) Name or IP: Look up names of IP addresses Packet size: Reps per hop: Click here for help and instructions. Your results will appear below: (Please be patient - it may take a minute for the results to start appearing.) another trace route
Trace Route from MIT
IMPORTANT: This tool works by sending a series of UDP packets with different port numbers and TTL (Time To Live). If you are running firewall software, your software may interpret the incoming packets as a hostile "port scan" originating from this server (jis.mit.edu). The cable modem levels look good, I do not see anything to worry about for now. The only issue is this cable modem does not provide a Signal To Noise ratio, but for now, I would not worry too much about the cable modem.
The first thing I would do is power cycle the modem and router to see if this helps matters. Then re-run the Speed Test to a close physical location to you from www.speakeasy.net/speedtest I cannot make clear heads or tails from the route traces provided. The 2nd route trace has some very troubling times in the Comcast network of 1000 - 3000 ms!!! This is 1-3 second response which could be part of the problem. Ping and route trace response times should be under 100 ms in most situations. The first route trace has something suspicious on hop #9, 112 ms, but again, this is a bit unclear with this specific trace. Run a tracert from the command prompt of the machine. Start, Run, type "cmd", then enter, type tracert www.comcast.net" then enter. Once the route trace is complete, right click on the top blue banner bar, chose edit and then Select All, then Copy. Paste this info back for review. JamesO |

Power cycle the modem and router and see if the Speed Test gets better. If not, connect directly to the modem and see what happens. Every time you change a device connected to the modem, you need to turn it off and back on to clear the MAC address.
If once you connect directly to the modem and you still have slow speeds, then it looks like a call to Comcast is in order. Possibly a bad modem, but it appears the levels are good and the route trace times are not bad. The time outs are fairly typical for some hops as well. JamesO |
