Hi there,
I'm trying to fix an internet problem for someone on my street, but I am completely stumped! Here are the deets: He has a dial-up connection with Windows XP, and recently installed IE7. After installing IE7, he couldn't access the internet. If ever you try typing in an address in, the text in the address bar will change to http:/// and it will display "Internet Explorer cannot display...". So I went over there and installed firefox. Same problem! "Firefox cannot establish a connection at...". So I installed AntiVir and Spybot. AntiVir found two Trojans, but I couldn't get the latest updates because whenever I tried to..."No connection to the internet could be produced". Same thing with Spybot, except I get "Socket Error #10061" But the strangest part of all this is that the "Ping" command is working fine, and he can still receive email no problem! I would be very grateful for any help anyone can give me! Thanks Sambobuk |

on a couple occasions I have seen similar issues, uninstalling borwser toolbars fixed the issue in these particilar situations, you may want to give that a try. Also, try running msconfig, and uncheck everything that does not need to be in startup, see if it works after that.

Toolsbars like Yahoo can cause problems with new installation of IE7. It usually causes the CPU to go to 100% and the machine becomes unresponsive. If this is the case, kill IE or reboot the machine. Uninstall any Toolbars like Yahoo, Google, AOL etc. I think the problem is with pop up blocking and the Microsoft RunOnce with IE7??
As for Firefox not working, this is something different. FF should work even with IE does not. There may be some DNS issue here?? Try entering these IP addresses in the http:// location and see what happens. 72.52.136.82 64.236.16.52 If these get you to web sites then there is some sort of DNS problem. JamesO |
