unable to connect to 1 website
I have an problem i cant fix. I am hopeing your suggestions will help me out.
My computer cannot connect to bravenet.com. I have included the things i have done below, and the nslookup + ping test that demonstrate the problem. To summarize, if I do nslookup, i get bravenet.com = 65.39.176.100. But if I ping it i get bravenet.com = 127.0.0.1 Doing a google search finds 127.0.0.1 is my computer, local 'IP phonebook' file. But I dont know what to do to fix it. (also: if you have a better suggestion for webhosting, please do suggest one :) I have no router. 1 computer direct connected to a cable modem. My ISP is Shaw, I am in Winnipeg, MB,CA. I use firewall BlackIce, which i update monthly so im hopeing its not a glitch in there. I ran AdAware Pro & SpyBot & AVG I assumed at first it was DNS problem. So I added new primary DNS servers , 1 local DNS from my university, and 1 DNS server from Comcast Minnesota (I work for them but I do billing not technical). So i changed my primary DNS server, and turned off the firewall, and its same problem. Thus I assume its my computer, otherwise a different DNS from another place would work. I did "netsh int ip reset" + "ipconfig /flushdns Then I did powercycled modem & reboot computer. still got the same issue data: C:\Documents and Settings>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : pixie Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : wp.shawcable.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Eth ernet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-40-63-C0-2D-BC Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : xx.xx.xx.xx Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 24.79.88.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 64.59.176.40 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 64.59.176.13 64.59.176.15 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Friday, February 09, 2007 9:08:31 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Friday, February 09, 2007 10:08:31 PM C:\Documents and Settings>nslookup bravenet.com Server: nsc1.nr.wp.shawcable.net Address: 64.59.176.13 Non-authoritative answer: Name: bravenet.com Address: 65.39.176.100 C:\Documents and Settings>ping bravenet.com Pinging bravenet.com [127.0.0.1] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms |

Look in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc and open the HOSTS file with NOTEPAD. I think you'll find an entry routing bravenet.com to 127.0.0.1
Remove that and it'll resolve correctly.

yes, i found this entry & deleted it.
# [BraveNet][Tracking Service][IE-SpyAd] 127.0.0.1 adserv.bravenet.com 127.0.0.1 images.bravenet.com 127.0.0.1 linktrack.bravenet.com 127.0.0.1 pub1.bravenet.com 127.0.0.1 www.bravenet.com I assume that means that bravenet likes to use trackers other than cookies and something on my computer put the entry into the hosts file. I've never looked in that directory before. Interesting to look through these files and see all that good tcp/ip stuff, wondering why windows puts it in a directory called "etc" ... |

The etc folder name is from Unix.
![]() I'm guessing you have some security software that didn't like Bravenet and put it into purgatory. ![]()
