Frustration with peer to peer network
I have a laptop running XP Pro. It is connected to a desktop by an ethernet cable. The Desktop runs xp Home, and is connected to the internet via a broadband connection. There is no router.
The network works inasmuch as the two computers can see each other and transfer files across the network. However, when I try to connect to the internet from the laptop, I can't. ICS is on on the desktop. The computers have been scanned for malicious software. There is no firewall on the laptop. Zonealarm is running on the desktop, but disabling it makes no difference. The laptop used to be able to connect to the internet using this setup, but not since I have reinstalled the OS. The laptop IP address has to be set manually (since the reinstallation) as the local area connection will not work otherwise (cannot repair as it cannot reset the IP; if try to do so using ipconfig, it cannot connect to the DHCP server). I have tried everything I know, and one or two things I don't. Can somebody please help? |

Did you try a broadband router? That would be my solution.

ICS can be a real PITA at times, especially if your modem is connected via USB, which I assume it is.
I agree with johnwill, if your modem has a ethernet option, then put another NIC in the desktop and then connect up using a router. Don't forget to change the existing cable to a straight through.
