Computer cannot connect to network.
Hi,
A week or so ago my PC started disconnecting from my Netgear Modem/wireless router. At first i could reconnect without any problems but a few days ago it stopped letting me connect completely. I tried connecting to the modem/router with a Ethernet cable (which i had used to connect to the router before) but it also couldn't connect. The network is still displayed on the wireless network connections window but every time i try connecting it starts connecting but then stops. The signal indicator says that it has a weak signal even though the wireless USB card has a direct line of sight with it. I have tried reformatting the computer (I was going to anyway in a week or two but thought I might as well pull it forward) but that hasn't done anything. I also have a Dell laptop which can connect to the router with full signal from the same desk. I have tried sharing the internet connection between the laptop and the PC with a different Ethernet cable but it hasn't worked. Thanks. |

If it won't connect with a cable, you have an internal issue. Try this first.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2. For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:
Type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here.

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
<C> Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>IPCONFIG /ALL Windows IP configuration Host Name...................: smith-pc Primary Dns Suffix..........: Node Type...................: Broadcast IP Routing Enabled..........: No WINS Proxy Enabled..........: No Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection: Media State.................: Media Disconnected Description.................: Linksys Wireless-G Portable USB Adap ter Physical Address............:00-04-66-EF-2F-14 D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator That was with everything plugged in (wireless card and Ethernet cable) When i tried with only the Ethernet cable plugged in it only got to where it says Windows IP Configuration. And i noticed another thing, the green light on the Ethernet port stays on even when the cables unplugged. Thanks for the help. |

The light staying on is normal. OTOH, your wired port is not showing up at all, which is not a good sign. What do you see in Device Manager under Network Controllers?

Your wired card has failed or is disabled in the BIOS for on-board network adapters. Why don't you see if you can get that working?

Ive just been through all the settings i can find on BIOS (its not really my area) and can't find any thing mentioning network, Ethernet or anything like that. Does that mean its failed? And if so, can it be fixed?

Is this an on-board NIC or a PCI expansion card?
