Trying to set up network

Hi there, we are new to this and trying to set up a network but are not sure if we have the right bits and pieces. At the moment the desktop is connected to the internet via cable modem. Hubby installed a Belkin wireless G router. I am able to connect to the internet on my laptop via WLAN. There is a network adapter installed on the desktop - ethernet PCI adapter. Do we need a wireless adapter in order to share files etc. Both are running XP and we hope eventually to connect the upstairs (win 98SE) computer and have a network up and running. At the moment neither computer shows up on the other. Sorry if this sounds confused, it is because I am. Thanks in advance for any help not to mention patience.

is the desktop connected to the cable modem provided by your ISP or to the Belkin router?....if modem then first connect the desktop to the router with an ethernet cable. and the laptop i believe is wireless so you dont need any other adapter(the desktop already has the ethernet adapter)

once you have this setup use the following link for guidance
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/howto/net.asp

for the computer upstairs you would probably need a wireless adapter so that it can connect to the router's network (or else a really long ethernet cable ). also as the upstairs comp is running Win98 you would need to have NetBEUI protocol installed too

Hi, thanks for your reply. As far as I can see, the desktop is connected to the cable modem, the desktop has another cable going into the router and the router has a cable going into the modem.

hi, as far as i know, most modems are capable of providing connectivity only on one of the ports(either USB or ethernet). disconnected the USB cable between desktop and modem and leave only the ethernet cable connected between the router and the desktop. that should allow both the laptop and desktop to communicate with the router. then follow the link in my previous post to set up a file/print sharing network

Hi again - I have checked the cables again and there are actually ony the two(others being the power supply), one from the modem to the router and the ethernet from the router to the desktop. Any other ideas that may help appreciated.

well the cabling seems to be alright. what router do you have? please post the name and model number. also check if the router is recognizing the desktop. you can tell by the LEDs on the router, if the desktop is connected to LAN/ethernet port 1 then the corresponding LED should be lit on the router. then provided the notebook is also connected to the same router wirelessly, you should be able to set up the network as per the link in my first post

It is a Belkin wireless G+ router. Everything seems to be connected OK. I ran the Network diagnostic on the desktop and everything seems fine. but nothing shows up in My network Places or computers in the same workgrooup. I did the same diagnostic on the laptop - it failed in the netwok adapters section Broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN and Motorolla Surfboard SB5100 usb cable modem both failed with IP address 192.168.2.2 (laptops address). I pinged the laptop, gateway and desktop from the desktop - all OK but when I tried to ping from the laptop, it managed the gateway and 3 of 4 attempts for the desktop but timed out on the laptop itself - help, what have I done or not done as the case may be. Also followed the file sharing instructions and made sure the firewall permitted it.

Failure to ping is almost always a firewall issue, first step is to disable all firewalls until you get file sharing working.

Hi, I have disabled the windows firewalls and the only thing running is AVG free. The router itself has a firewall setting which I can go online to their site and switch off. Would that make a difference?
Thanks Shona
