Can't access network, but can access net??

was out on a job today at a medium sized company and attempted to log into their network with my laptop.

I firstly tried doing this through a wireless connection, but could not get on to the network. I then tried with a LAN, but this didn't work either. The funny thing is, with both connections I COULD access the internet, but was unable to actually access the network; nothing would come up in 'Network Connections'.

Myself and an extremely competent IT person from the company fiddled round with settings for around 2 hours, but couldn't get it to work.

I use a 6 month old Toshiba Tecra A6 (XP Pro). My workmate who was also there had no problems accessing the network using a Samsung laptop.

Does anyone have ideas about what could be stopping me from accessing the network? I have to go back to this company next week and need to be able access their network.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

PS-I don't see how this would affect it, but I am running Norton Internet Security 2006.

Do you have NIS set to allow filesharing? Also add the subnet of the other company to the trusted list in NIS. If this doesn't work try disabling NIS. If it works then, there is a setting in NIS that is preventing the network access.

I had a look on my NIS settings in Firewall>Advanced>General. Windows File Sharing is currently blocked. Do you suggest trying to change this to permit? I find it interesting that for all the default profile settings NIS offers (ie. home, away, office etc), file sharing seems to be blocked as a default.

In my network connections, I usually have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks disabled. This was one of the settings I tried changing when trying to access this network the other day (which obviously didn't work). If I change this setting in NIS, should I also allow File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks?

I do not usually log on to a network, so no, my computer is not on a domain.

Well, NIS could, and frequently does, cause a host of networking issues.

Quite frankly, I'd start my quest to connect with NIS completely uninstalled.

I'm not to keen on totally unistalling NIS, I've had issues with reinstalling it after it has been uninstalled on computers in the past.

I'd prefer to fiddle with settings instead of totally uninstalling.
So if anyone has more suggestions or elaborations on those already mentioned, it would be appreciated. Thanks

You will likely need Filesharing enabled. Also make sure the subnet of this network is set to allowed.

By 'file sharing' are you referring to the NIS setting or the network connections setting?

Also, what do I have to do to make sure that the subnet of the network is allowed? Are you referring to typing in the subnet mask when adding the network to the trusted zone, or some other setting?

Thanks

Talking about NIS here.

Yes, add the subnet of the network to the trusted zone.

I used to have NIS6 but have switched to Kaspersky so I am a little fuzzy on the exact specifics.
